Well, I don't know --

From your description, it sounds like your browser won't let you have what you want.

If it is not possible to remove a certain search engine from the browser you are using now,

And

If you object strenuously to the options in that browser that are preventing you from having what you want,

then

  • Perhaps try using a different browser.

OR

  • If your browser allows / supports the option, select / add a different search engine and mark it as "Default".  True - that is not what you want -- it might suffice.

OR

  • Finally, try asking the people who wrote and support your browser.

Use the search engine you have now and search for support for your browser.

Examples,

Search for

  • Avast browser settings
  • Edge browser settings
  • Opera browser settings
  • Firefox browser settings

Welcome to the HP Community --

Search Engines are part of your Web Browser --

These are not related to your brand of computer or even your Operating System.

For example, Firefox runs on both Windows and Linux -

This particular browser includes a method of controlling which search engines are available.

Firefox > menu Tools > Settings > Scroll down to Topic Search Shortcuts

Select / Add / Remove search engines you want -- or do not want

What to do?

Suggestions

Learn what your browser can do --

Go to your browser's Settings

OR

Type a question on your search bar.

OR

Use Edge Copilot - Ask the AI --

"How do I remove a search engine from my Edge browser?"

Copilot AI generated answer

Remove a search engine in Microsoft Edge

  1. Open Microsoft Edge.

  2. Click the three dots menu (Settings and more) at the top-right and choose Settings.

  3. Select Privacy, search, and services in the left column.

  4. Scroll to Search and services, then click Address bar and search.

  5. Click Manage search engines.

  6. Find the search engine you want to remove, click the three-dot menu next to it, and choose Remove. If you want a different default, set that first by choosing Make default next to your preferred engine.

>> Notes and troubleshooting <<

  • Some built-in or default engines may not offer a Remove option; in those cases you can change the default to another engine but not delete the built-in entry.

  • If the engine you want to remove isn’t listed, perform a quick search using that engine in the address bar, then revisit Manage search engines — Edge will typically add it so you can remove it afterward.

I have tried this multiple times and  still Yahoo is there.  Even tried reset to original and that did not work either.
