I bought a computer at auction, that had been returned to HP for service, I think. It still has the old users login, and I want to factory reset, but don't know how to get there when it's asking me to login as the old user.

Hi @notagolfpro
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query.
I understand that you are facing issues with the Computer purchased from an Auction and you are unable to bypass the Old user login details. To remove old user data and perform a factory reset on your HP computer, follow these steps:
Backup Your Data:
- Ensure all important data is backed up as a factory reset will erase all data on the device.
Restart the Computer:
- Turn on or restart the computer.
Access the Recovery Manager:
- As the computer is booting, repeatedly press the F11 key until the "Choose an option" screen is displayed.
Choose ‘Troubleshoot’:
- Click on Troubleshoot from the options.
Select ‘HP Recovery Manager’:
- Click on HP Recovery Manager in the Troubleshoot menu if it's available.
- If it is not visible, click on Advanced options, then System Recovery.
System Recovery:
- Choose System Recovery to reset your PC to its factory state.
- Follow any on-screen instructions to continue with the recovery process.
Factory Reset:
- During the process, you might be given options to Back up your files first (if you haven’t already).
- Proceed with Recover without backing up your files for a complete reset.
Completion:
- Allow the system to complete the recovery process, which may include multiple restarts.
Setup Your New User Profile:
- Upon completion, set up the computer with your information as if it were new.
Hope this helps, Please revert if the issue persists.
Take care and have an amazing day!
