Hi @alicetaw,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If you're experiencing issues with scanning on your HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 and are prompted to add the device or change network settings, there are a few troubleshooting steps you can try before considering those drastic actions. Here's a step-by-step guide to help you resolve the issue.

Check Physical Connections:

  • Ensure that the printer is properly connected to your computer via USB or is connected to the same network if you're using a wireless connection.
  • Make sure there are no loose cables and that the printer is powered on.

Restart Devices:

  • Restart both your computer and the HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 printer. Sometimes, a simple restart can resolve communication issues.

Update Drivers:

  • Make sure you have the latest printer drivers installed on your computer. You can visit the official HP website and download the latest drivers for your specific printer model.

Reinstall Software:

  • Uninstall the HP printer software from your computer and reinstall it. This can help fix any corrupted installation files.
  • Visit the official HP support website to download the latest software for your printer.

Check Network Settings:

  • If you are using a wireless connection, ensure that both your computer and the printer are connected to the same Wi-Fi network.
  • Verify that the printer's network settings are configured correctly.

Firewall and Antivirus:

  • Check your firewall and antivirus settings to ensure they are not blocking communication between the computer and the printer. You may need to temporarily disable them for testing purposes.

HP Print and Scan Doctor:

  • Download and run the HP Print and Scan Doctor, a diagnostic tool provided by HP to troubleshoot printing and scanning issues. It can automatically fix many common problems.

Check for Windows Updates:

  • Ensure that your operating system is up to date by checking for and installing any available Windows updates.

Remember that you don't necessarily have to add the device or change network settings unless it's absolutely necessary. The above steps should help you troubleshoot and resolve the scanning issue without resorting to drastic measures.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
