HP probook 650 G1
Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

OK guys my other laptop fell from my little table onto my carpet a few months ago, and the screen was damaged in so much there was a black area top right, it wasn't to much of a problem as 98% of the screen was OK, and it was still working as it did, but seeing as the sound had packed up previously, I decided to get another refurbished laptop, I've decided to save my pics and documents off the dropped laptop but when I powered it up all I've got is writing on the screen ! no sign of windows, and its telling me it cant find an operating system, does this mean the hard drive has packed up,? Its an HP probook 650G1 And the bottom cover just un-clips I have had a quick look to make sure there were no leads or plugs unplugged but that is all, I don't mind buying a new hard drive but does that mean I'd also have to purchase widows? I was using widows 7 on it and I am sure the recover & and installation DVDs i have were for this machine , cheers guys

I'm sorry about the loss of data.  I wish there was more that we could do but if the drive is clicking then there is nothing more that can be done.  Professional Data Recovery Service's might be able to get your data back but they usually are VERY expensive so you need to put a price on your data.  Do you need it so bad that you would spend a few grand to get them back or will you leave it in the past and start fresh?

Its possible that there is simply no OS on the hard drive. Look in the BIOS and see if it detects a hard drive.  if possible try and remove the drive from the machine to see if there even is one installed in the machine.

Almost sounds like it is missing a driver so it can't see the drive.  What version of Windows are you installing?  also is there a Windows Product key on the bottom of the machine?

I purchased  it  refubished  I was  using  windows 7    but I cant remeber  if it was originally  windows 8  which i didn't like so I might have  got  the classic look  windows 7  download from google.  there is no pruduct key  visible but there is a

Pro windows 8  sticker on  the bottom , so maybe its not  recognising  the  windows 7 installation  dvd  I am trying  ,  the intel inside i5  with hologram  sticker is on the inside too the serial number   for my machine is,  5CG428F4JG.  if thats of any use

I have  managed to find  the bios section and have  upgraded to 01.43   25/01/2018, which has  registered on the information page F1,  and it has passed the hardware diagnostic check.

It might not be seeing the hard drive because the Windows 7 installation Media may be to old or may be missing the hard drive controller driver so it can't see the drive.  This can usually be fixed by downloading the driver and putting it on a USB and the telling the Windows installation media to use it and it should be able to see the drive.  Worst comes to worst just move the hard drive from the old system to the new system.  If they are the same laptop it should boot right up.  May have to reactivate Windows though.

once again  thanks for your help  ,is there any chance  you could send me a link  for the driver  ?   also  my current machine is  HP   pavilion DV6   are the drives   compatable ?   a friend told me to get  a   caddy !   I have looked them up  and  I wouldnt know  which one to get!!   what are these and what do they do ?  thanks again

One thing i would like to check before going with a driver method is seeing if the BIOS has the Hard drive set in a Raid mode.  Usually there is an option for running the hard drive in AHCI or ATA mode and some laptops have RAID as an option.  Think you could look through the BIOS and see?  The BIOS key on HP computers are F10.
