how do i add or change my HP finger print and pass word?

every time my note book updates I have to sign in.  I have forgotten my password ,but no matter how many times I try I am not offered the option of changing the password. and for some reason occasionally it will not recognise my finger print. it took me two days to get on with my finger print this time. I assume as a manual worker some times my finger print may be cracked or scratched? I want to add my wife's finger print to see if that will solve the problem. any ideas?

It's dangerous to not know your password - should the fingerprint login fail completely you will be locked out.  I am sure you know this - the message simply bears repetition.

Important Side Bar

This is a good time to remind you (and those reading) that it is essential that you always keep your most critical information (files / images / documents) backed up to a location not directly on your computer.  For example, in addition to using backup software (for example File History), keep at least your most important data backed up to a USB stick, to the cloud, "somewhere" you can access your data if your computer becomes unavailable.    Remember, too, that "Cloud" needs Internet access to work.  Think of the types of information you keep in the Safe in the garage - store "what matters most" of your digital data where you can get to it in an emergency.

What to do?

Assuming you are (finally) logged in AND that your account provides Administrator access, the first thing you should do is create a new account on the computer and edit that new account to switch the type of account to Admin.  

The new admin account can be local account - the point of the new account is to create a means of accessing the computer as an Admin should your own account refuse to let you in.

After you do that, create another account for your wife - and set that account ad an admin account, too.

NOTES

• Log into each of the new accounts to make sure you can actually access the account.
• At this time, do not add the PIN (needed for the eventual use of the fingerprint logon) and do not set up fingerprint logon.

What about that forgotten password?

Once you have two more accounts that include administrator privilege, you can either address your own forgotten password or you can move on and come back to this later...

If you are using your Microsoft account, the password can be reset.  We cannot help you with that but Microsoft can do so.

Stubborn Fingerprint Reader

The good news is that the fingerprint reader on your computer is the "slide style" reader located on the keyboard - these tend to work better than any other type.  (There is some personal bias in that remark - just ignore it.)

The other news is that there is a newer driver available for the newer versions of Windows 10.

This particular driver is not tagged for your computer but it does support the fingerprint reader device.

Assuming it works, the new driver might help reduce or even eliminate the issues you are seeing (difficult, stubborn, irritating fingerprint reader logon)
