I have read through all the posts, and have seen that most people have had the problem return. I only posted because I never seen anyone post a part number of what had been replaced, also because I couldn't find the part number of the part they replaced in my laptop (thought it was strange). I will update if any of the symptoms return as I do use the laptop a lot.

It might be a good idea to post the version info from the Gesture Suite as well as the driver version.

That's under the Info section of HP Control Zone

Synaptics Gesture Suite

SGS Version: SGS 14.2
ClickPad Series 1.5 - Imaging Sensor
Driver Version: 18.1.7.16 16Jun14
FW Version: 1.4
Scrybe Version: Not installed

Thanks. So just the driver difference due to windows 7 vs 8.

Frankly and I mentioned this before; this issue behaves like an IRQ or memory conflict; despite that Device Manager resources say "no confliect". Below shows an eventlog error of which I have hundreds. This is the Application Log of Event Viewer. The SynTPEngService is part of Synaptics Control Zone. Notice it says the install could be corrupted.

Can get to event viewer via Start, Run and type eventvwr and hit enter. In 8 I have no idea. More info on IRQ's below.

I noticed in my eventlog just now, this event:

Log Name:      Application
Source:        SynTPEnhService
Date:          11/12/2014 11:00:54 AM
Event ID:      0
Task Category: None
Level:         Information
Keywords:      Classic
User:          N/A
Computer:      Jeff-HP
Description:
The description for Event ID 0 from source SynTPEnhService cannot be found. Either the component that raises this event is not installed on your local computer or the installation is corrupted. You can install or repair the component on the local computer.

If the event originated on another computer, the display information had to be saved with the event.

The following information was included with the event:

SynTPEnhService
Session Changed User lock
===========================================================

In 7, I can do start/run/msinfo32, enter and see IRQ and memory usage.

While Device Manager shows the synaptics smbus touchpad hardware using irq 12 with no conflicts,

msinfo shows Synaptics SMBus Driver sharing IRQ 18 with Intel 8 Series/C220 Series PCI Express Root Port #3 - 8C10,

whatever that is. Might be USB 3.0 interface or something.

IRQ sharing is not necessarily a problem, but I'd feel a lot better if it was on a separate IRQ port and if I didn't have all these synaptics errors in my eventlog.

I find that when you go to the settings on the control zone in control panel that if you go to the sensitivity there and turn it to the setting right before heavy touch.  Then go to the mouse settings in control panel and turn down the pointer speed to a not so fast mode that it helps in keeping it from acting up as much.  I find that the trackpad is way more usable this way the only issue with it now besides the small hicuups which are not bad and having two or more fingers on it which just makes it flip out but still usable just might be a bit more troublesome than if it worked properly.  Besides that I say this laptop is worth the money it works well and the 1080p screen and not to mention it's touchscreen so that's a plus.  I hope this helps with your issues someone mentioned turning down the pointer speed helped them and another said turning the control zone setting to heavy touch helped them so when I seen both those posts I tried both ideas and they helped me allot again I hope this helps if not I hope you find your solution because this is a very nice laptop.

just an fyi;

I disabled this device in device manager - Intel 8 Series/C220 Series PCI Express Root Port #3 - 8C10

I did a cold boot and checked msinfo32 and it did not show up in the list as sharing IRQ 18. However the message in eventlog still came up and when I enabled multi-finger and double tap, I still have the same issue where the cursor is jumping all over the screen. So, eliminating irq sharing did not help. I think at this point, I'm going to call HP support and ask what that eventlog error is in regard to Synaptics.

I don't understand why we should call HP as a last resort - Everyone seems to have this problem with the control zone and I do not see any useful answers. It is seriously annoying having to use an external mouse on a high-end laptop. Come on HP, update the drivers or something! I have seen so many posts on this problem.

Some users say that rebooting provides a temporary fix - to save time, open the Control Zone properties from the task bar, hit the HP Control Zone Settings tab and Reset Devices button. I say this saves time rather than re-booting, but I am sure other users would agree that when it starts playing up, it may take some time to get the cursor to perform the steps I just mentioned.

HP - Do something please!

I agree, however I did contact support and have an active case open.

I have to go through the usual inconvenient steps of backing up my data

and sending my unit in to be worked on. I told the support rep that others have done

that and it didn't help. So, I think this will be fruitless. However if it can't be fixed,

I believe I'm going to demand that they give me some replacement model that does not

have this Control Zone in it. I will also not make the mistake of buying a laptop that does

not have separate click buttons as part of the mouse track. The click functionality of this

thing is impractical due to the size and I also don't like being forced into multi-finger

mouse use. I bought Windows 7 for a reason. I don't like 8 and I think it is ridiculous to have a

giant pad just beneath my hands while I'm typing. I suppose that is why some manufacturer

put the pad up by the screen instead of beneath one's hands. But then if you have to move your hands

up off the keyboard to get to it, you might as well just use touch screen.
