Hi @pipty,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

The message "The computer restarted unexpectedly or encountered an unexpected error. Windows installation cannot proceed" usually indicates that Windows setup was interrupted or became corrupted, causing the computer to restart repeatedly instead of completing the installation.

Try these steps:

1. Open Command Prompt

  • When the error message appears, press Shift + F10 to open Command Prompt.

2. Edit the Registry

  • Type regedit and press Enter.

  • Navigate to:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\Setup\Status\ChildCompletion

  • Double-click setup.exe.

  • Change the value from 1 to 3.

  • Close Registry Editor and Command Prompt.

3. Restart the Setup

  • Click OK on the error message.

  • Windows should attempt to continue the installation.

If the issue persists

  1. Boot from a Windows installation USB.

  2. Select Repair your computer > Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Repair.

  3. If Startup Repair does not resolve the issue, reinstall Windows.

HP Recovery Option

If your HP computer supports it, press F11 repeatedly during startup to open HP Recovery HP PCs - Software recovery options (Windows) | HP® Support and restore the system to its factory settings if the Windows installation is corrupted.

I hope this helps. Take care and have a great day!

I'm an HP Employee.
