@Harcon

Hello;
Allow me to welcome you to the HP forums!

What you describe could be the battery not charging or not holding a charge and/or the charger not working.

Here are some troubleshooting steps you can try:
http://support.hp.com/in-en/document/c00259897
http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03325217
http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c00363266?jumpid=reg_r1002_usen_c-001_title_r0006

If those confirm the battery is not charging or not holding a charge, you would need to replace it.

If those confirm the charger is not working, you would need to replace that.

If both the battery and charger check out OK, then it's an internal problem with the circuitry in the laptop, and unless the laptop is still under warranty, it's likely to cost more to fix that than to replace the laptop, outright.

Good Luck

Thanks for your reply.

Yes, I removed the battery and reinstalled it with no success, however the problem has now been resolved.

After the laptop had been on for a few hours, it started charging again. I have no idea why - I suspect the temperature of the room could be a factor.

While that is good news, that your PC is working again, I seriously doubt the ambient temperature of the room would have anything to do with the charging issues.

I would not be surprised if this problem surfaces again.

Hi

Thanks for your reply.

The laptop in question is almost new, and seldom used except for updates etc.  It was kept in my bedroom (which is cool with centrall heating off.  I mainly use my imac in the living roomfor for surfing the web and email.

The problem with the battery charging happened before, and after trying reinstalling the battery, I unplugged the power cable and checked all electrical cables.  The laptop battery started charging again.  I did the same again when the problem recurred lately, but the battery did not start charging initially: it did however when i repeated the process several hours later.  The problem, I speculated was physical rather than a software problem possibly connected to plug's metal pins contracting in cold. Problem my not be solved, but fingers crossed.
