Hi @Rexie3
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It’s definitely annoying when your HP laptop shuts off unexpectedly, especially when it’s plugged in. There could be several reasons for this, and I’ll suggest a few steps you can try to troubleshoot and potentially fix the issue:
1. Check Power Settings
Sometimes, power settings can cause the laptop to shut down automatically.
- Go to Control Panel > Power Options.
- Select the power plan you're using and click Change plan settings.
- Then, click Change advanced power settings and check settings for things like "Sleep," "Hibernate," and "Battery" settings to ensure nothing is set to turn the system off unexpectedly.
2. Check Battery Health
Even if it’s plugged in, an issue with the battery could cause the laptop to turn off. HP laptops often come with a built-in battery diagnostic tool:
- Open HP Support Assistant (search for it in the Start menu).
- Go to Diagnostics and then select Battery Check to see if your battery is healthy.
3. Overheating
If your laptop is overheating, it could shut down automatically to prevent damage. Check the temperature and ensure proper ventilation:
- Clean any dust or debris from the vents to ensure proper airflow.
- Make sure the laptop is on a flat, hard surface to allow proper cooling.
4. Check for System Updates
Outdated drivers or BIOS could cause power management issues. Make sure everything is up to date:
- Go to HP Support Assistant and check for any recommended updates.
- You can also go to Device Manager to update the battery and power management drivers.
5. Run a System Diagnostic Test
HP laptops have a built-in hardware diagnostic tool:
- Shut down your laptop.
- Turn it on and immediately press Esc or F2 repeatedly until the HP Startup Menu appears.
- Select System Diagnostics and run a test to check for hardware issues, particularly with the battery or power components.
6. Try a Different Power Adapter
Even though the laptop is plugged in, there could be an issue with the charger or power cable. If you have access to another charger compatible with your laptop, try using that to see if the issue persists.
7. Check Event Viewer for Errors
The Event Viewer in Windows logs any system errors or events that might explain the shutdown.
- Type Event Viewer in the Windows search bar and open it.
- Under Windows Logs, click on System, and check for any critical errors or warnings around the time your laptop shuts down.
8. Check for Malware
Malware can sometimes cause unexpected shutdowns. Run a full system scan with your antivirus software or Windows Defender.
9. BIOS Reset
In rare cases, a corrupted BIOS can cause power issues:
- You can reset the BIOS to default settings by shutting down the laptop, then turning it on and pressing F10 to enter the BIOS settings. Once there, choose to restore defaults.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
