Hi @R-Gervais,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

I understand you’re trying to recover your HP 17-by-3063st laptop and it’s asking for a USB BIOS recovery drive, but you can’t find the BIOS file to put on the USB. Let’s go through a few steps to get the correct BIOS and create the recovery USB.

Confirm the exact model name
On the bottom cover or inside the battery bay, look for:
Product Number (PN): something like xxxxxx#ABA
System Board ID: usually shown in BIOS recovery screens
These ensure we download the correct BIOS package.

Download the BIOS from HP’s support site
On another working computer:
– Go to HP Customer Support → Software & Drivers
– Search for HP Laptop 17-by3000 series
– Enter your product number when prompted
– Scroll to the BIOS section
Download the latest BIOS update file (usually named SPxxxxx.exe).

Run the BIOS installer to extract the recovery files
Double-click the downloaded BIOS file.
Choose “Extract” or “Install” → it will ask if you want to create a Recovery USB.
Even if the laptop you're fixing is dead, this step can be done on ANY Windows machine.

Create the USB BIOS recovery drive
Insert a blank 8GB USB drive.
In the BIOS installer tool, select “Create USB BIOS Recovery drive.”
This places these folders on the USB:
Hewlett-Packard
HP
BIOS (with .bin / .fd files)

Use the keyboard shortcut to launch BIOS recovery
On the broken laptop:
– Turn it off
– Insert the USB
– Hold Windows key + B (or Win + V)
– Press and hold Power for 2–3 seconds while still holding Win+B
The screen should show HP BIOS Update with progress bars.

If the screen stays black but lights flash
Keep holding for 30 seconds.
HP laptops often take time before showing the recovery menu.

I hope this helps.
