Hi @Kcruzin66,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I understand that you’re not seeing any power options in the Start menu and are required to hold the power button to shut down. This isn’t expected behaviour, and we’ll work through it with you.

Let’s go step by step:

1. Try accessing power options another way

  • Press Ctrl + Alt + Delete → look for the power icon at the bottom right.
  • Or press Alt + F4 on the desktop → check if the shutdown menu appears.

If these also don’t show power options, continue below.

2. Check Group Policy settings (if available)
Sometimes the shutdown options are hidden by settings:

  • Press Windows + R, type gpedit.msc, and press Enter
  • Go to:
User Configuration → Administrative Templates → Start Menu and Taskbar
  • Find “Remove and prevent access to the Shut Down, Restart, Sleep, and Hibernate commands”
  • Make sure it is set to Not Configured or Disabled

3. Run System File Check
Corrupted system files can cause this:

  • Open Command Prompt as Administrator
  • Run: sfc /scannow
  • Let it complete, then restart the laptop

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!

I'm an HP Employee.
