Hi @Apurv1 ,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand how frustrating it is when a new PC like the HP 240 G9 crashes without any blue screen or error message—it provides no clue!

When a computer instantly shuts down or restarts without showing an error, it is almost always a sign of a critical hardware failure or an immediate, unhandled system condition that prevents Windows from creating a crash log (BSOD).

Based on the nature of the crash (no error), here is the troubleshooting plan, starting with the most likely causes:

When a computer instantly shuts down or restarts without showing an error, it is almost always a sign of a critical hardware failure or an immediate, unhandled system condition that prevents Windows from creating a crash log (BSOD).

Based on the nature of the crash (no error), here is the troubleshooting plan, starting with the most likely causes:

1. Hardware Diagnostics (The First and Most Important Step)

The laptop's BIOS has built-in tools to test the memory, storage, and CPU. This is the fastest way to confirm if a component is faulty.

  1. Shut down the laptop completely.

  2. Power the laptop on and immediately start repeatedly pressing the F2 key until the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI menu appears.

  3. Select Component Tests (or "System Tests").

  4. Run the Memory Test (Extensive). Memory faults are a very common cause of silent crashes.

  5. Run the Hard Drive or Storage Test (Extensive, if available).

  6. If any test Fails, write down the Failure ID and contact HP Support, as the component needs replacement.

2. Check for Overheating (The Most Common Cause)

A sudden, silent shutdown is the classic safety mechanism for overheating (the CPU or GPU hits a thermal limit and shuts down to prevent damage). So,check temperature, improve airflow and clean Vents.

3. Software & Driver Checks:

Update chipset, display .bios drivers

https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/hp-240-14-inch-g9-notebook-pc/2101122434

4. Disable Automatic Restart: This won't fix the problem, but it will force Windows to show a Blue Screen (BSOD) with an error code if the crash is driver-related, giving us a clearer clue.

  1. Search for and open View advanced system settings.

  2. In the Startup and Recovery section, click Settings.

  3. Uncheck the box next to Automatically restart under "System failure."

  4. Click OK and restart the PC.

If the crashing continues after running the diagnostics and updating the firmware/drivers, the issue points back to a failing component like the motherboard or CPU that cannot be fixed with software.

Please , do let me know if you need any other assistance, will be happy to assist you 🙂

I hope you have a good day ahead,

And Feel free to ask any other queries as well.
