Hello, after changing my SSD I wanted to reinstall my HP programs on my new drive, but an error message appears midway through the installation using HP Recovery. Could you please help me? Thank you in advance.

Hi @Danz942,

Thank you for responding.

I understand that you are facing issues with the restoration failure in HP Recovery Manager often stems from corrupted recovery files, hardware issues (like a failing hard drive), or BIOS settings I would request you to please follow the steps:

Check Recovery Media

Verify Recovery Media Integrity:

  • If using a USB recovery drive, ensure it was created correctly and is free from corruption.
  • If you downloaded the recovery image, confirm that the file is complete and not corrupted.

Create Fresh Recovery Media:

  • Use the HP Cloud Recovery Tool to create a new recovery USB drive. This tool is specifically designed for HP devices.
  • Download the tool from the HP support site here   Link   Media Creation Tool

Perform a Hard Reset

Before retrying the recovery process:

  1. Turn off the laptop completely.
  2. Disconnect the power adapter, external devices, and remove the battery (if removable).
  3. Hold the power button for 15 seconds to drain any residual power.
  4. Reconnect the power adapter and attempt recovery again.

Adjust BIOS Settings

Some BIOS settings may interfere with the recovery process:

Reset BIOS to Default:

  • Enter BIOS (press Esc or F10 during startup).
  • Select Load Setup Defaults, save, and exit.

Disable Secure Boot:

  • In BIOS, navigate to Security > Secure Boot > Disable.
  • Ensure Legacy Boot is enabled, if supported. (Note: Many newer HP laptops do not support Legacy Boot.)

Update BIOS:

Hope this helps, Please revert if the issue persists.

Have good day.

I can confirm that nothing works, regardless of the SSD used.

Hi @Danz942

Thank you responding.

I regret to hear that the issue is not resolved. I log indicates the HP system’s storage controller/firmware (BIOS/UEFI) or its configuration is preventing any SSD from being recognized, not that every SSD is bad. Start with BIOS/UEFI checks, HP UEFI diagnostics, BIOS/firmware updates,I would request you to please follow the steps:

Enter BIOS/UEFI

  • Check if the SSD is detected at the firmware level.
  • Power on → press Esc repeatedly → press F10
  • Navigate to System Information → Storage
  • Verify if your SSD is listed
  • If not, continue with reseating and diagnostics

Reseat the SSD

  • Ensure the SSD is properly connected and secured.
  • Power off and unplug the PC
  • Open the chassis or back cover
  • Remove the SSD and reinsert it firmly
  • Tighten the M.2 screw or check SATA cable

Try Alternate Slot/Port

  • Rule out a faulty connector by testing another slot.
  • If your PC has multiple M.2 slots, move the SSD
  • For SATA drives, try a different SATA port and cable

Run HP Hardware Diagnostics (UEFI)

  • Use HP’s built‑in diagnostics to confirm hardware health.
  • Power on → Keep tapping on Esc →once you Enter Startup menu press F2
  • Select System Tests → Extensive Test
  • Run Storage/Drive tests
  • Save or screenshot any failure codes for support

Reset CMOS/BIOS

  • Clear corrupted settings that may block SSD initialization.
  • In BIOS, choose Restore Defaults and save
  • If issue persists, power off and remove the CMOS battery for 1–2 minutes
  • Reinsert battery, boot, and re‑enter BIOS
  • Reconfigure date/time and boot mode (UEFI)

Hope this helps, Please revert if the issue persists.

My computer is an HP 17cn0523nf with a simplified BIOS, so I don't have access to the storage settings in my BIOS.
