Troubleshooting black screen issues on HP Notebooks: Click here to view the instructions!

"I am extremely disappointed with my HP laptop, which has barely been a year since I purchased it. Initially, the screen started displaying improperly, and now it's showing different lines on the screen. The audio has also become distorted with disturbances in between. To make matters worse, it shuts down on its own. These issues are frustrating, and I'm worried about what will happen when the warranty expires. It feels like the laptop is only functional because of the warranty, and I'm concerned that I'll be left with a defective product once it's over. I didn't expect such poor performance from an HP laptop, and I'm questioning the value of my purchase."

@Bhavya1997, Welcome to HP Support Community,

Thank you for posting your query; I’m here to help by guiding you through steps to resolve this issue

Screen Issues

Restart in Safe Mode: Restart your laptop and get into safe mode. This helps check if it's a software or hardware issue.

Reference: HP PCs - Windows Safe Mode (Windows 10) | HP® Support

Update Graphics Drivers: Right-click Start > Device Manager > Display Adapters > Right-click your graphics driver > Update Driver.

Try an External Monitor: Connect your laptop to a monitor. If the external monitor works fine, it’s likely a screen issue.

Check Screen Settings: Right-click on the desktop > Display Settings > Make sure your refresh rate matches your screen's specs (60Hz, etc.).

Audio Issues (Distortion)

Update Audio Drivers: Right-click Start > Device Manager > Sound, Video and Game Controllers > Right-click your audio driver > Update Driver.

Check Audio Settings: Right-click the sound icon in the taskbar > Sound Settings > Ensure correct device is selected.

Disable Audio Enhancements: Right-click sound icon > Sounds > Playback tab > Right-click your audio device > Properties > Enhancements tab > Disable all sound effects.

Random Shutdowns

Check for Overheating: Make sure vents are clear. Use a tool like HWMonitor to check your laptop's temperature.

Battery Health: Right-click the battery icon > Battery Settings > Or type powercfg /batteryreport in Command Prompt to check battery status.

Turn Off Fast Startup: Go to Control Panel > Power Options > Choose what the power buttons do > Uncheck Turn on fast startup.

Run Diagnostics: Turn off laptop > Press Esc > Select F2 to run HP’s built-in diagnostics.

General Fixes

Check for System Errors: Open Command Prompt (Admin) > Type sfc /scannow > Press Enter.

Update Windows: Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > Check for updates.

I hope this helps.

Please feel free to reply here if you have any questions or if you need further clarification on any of the steps.

Take care and have a good day.

I had similar issues with screen flickering and distorted audio, and it turned out to be a driver conflict after a Windows update. Might be worth checking rollback options or trying a clean driver reinstall.

On a different note, if you’re using your laptop mostly for media, I’ve been using this ad-free streaming app that runs super smooth even on older devices:

Free, no login, and great for live TV or background content while working.

Hope you get the hardware sorted soon — those problems are the worst when you’re mid-task.
