To answer question received via PM about Recovery Manager missing.

1-Do you still have the Recovery partition on your hard drive? If not there is no way to make recovery media -and Recovery Manager is not going to install.

2-Did you try Recovery Manager Installer from your Support page?

3-If the recovery partition is still on hard drive you may be able to boot into it using F11 key immediately after power on. This would restore the notebook to factory setup and make Recovery Manager available to make Recovery Media. This depends on the hard drive being healthy enough to handle a recovery.

So if I'm able to get into it that way, would I still be able to follow the steps as usual to do it on a USB? Restoring to factory setup won't erase Windows?
That's the only thing left to do right? After that, I'll just need to install from the USB on the fresh hard drive and i'll have a working computer with Windows and everything?

If you are able to boot into Recovery using F11- you should have the option there to create Recovery Discs. It will be in last column under "I'd like to take precautions". Try that first before choosing System Recovery in first column. I honestly can't remember if it will let you make Recovery from that screen. I have always made mine using Recovery Manager in Windows- but it can only say yes or no. And if it does work there I'm not sure if usb flash drive will be an option or only dvds.

To answer the question of doing a System Recovery-no,it does not erase Windows. It reinstalls it and all other software/drivers. The laptop would be restored to state it was in when first purchased. That is what I was shooting for-so HP Recovery Manager would again be there to make recovery media. But, if you can make it without doing the System Recovery that will be quicker. Then you can get the hard drive replaced and boot from recovery media.

Sorry for the delay in response.

I was able to boot into Recovery Manager using F11, but there is no option to create recovery media there. Should I just go ahead and do the system restore? Do you think my hard drive will be able to handle it? There is also an option called "Minimized Image Recovery" would this be a better option or is it something different?
HP Recommended

Minimized Image Recovery will be fine-and it is usually faster.

Alright, I will go ahead and do that then. I hope my hard drive can last long enough to do it all the way. Thanks!

Alright, I was able to create the Recovery Media, now i'm just not sure how to use it to get windows back on my new hard drive which I also already installed. The only guide I have been able to find is for Windows 7.

The main problem is I am not sure wether to select System Recovery or Factory Reset when booting from the USB. No guides seem to clarify which to choose.

System Recovery states that it will not restore the recovery partition. What does that mean? Do I need the recovery partition restored?
