Microsoft Windows 11

I have a HP Laptop 15-dy2177nr, 2 yr and 3 months old only. It has turned into very slow machine. The "Start" hard button as well as "Start" logo button, upon clicking, does not trigger any activity. It has turned into a dead button. What could be the fix for it? Any suggestions?

@VKD7, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding "Start" button!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

I can imagine how frustrating it feels when your laptop’s Start button just sits there silently, almost like it’s ignoring you. Let’s try to bring it back to life:

Restart with a hard reset – Shut down the laptop fully, unplug the adapter, and press/hold the power button for about 15 seconds. Then reconnect power and start again. This clears out any “stuck” hardware states.

Check Windows updates & drivers – Sometimes the Start menu misbehaves after updates. Run Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager → choose File > Run new task → type ms-settings: and press Enter. This should open Settings so you can check for updates.

Run System File Check – In the same Run box, type cmd, then run sfc /scannow to repair missing/corrupt files that might be breaking Start.

New user profile test – Create a new user account (via Settings > Accounts). If Start works there, it’s likely a profile corruption.

Hope this helps!

Take care, and have an amazing day!
