HP Pavilion Laptop 15
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Often when my computer is closed or the screen is locked, I receive the following message:

"the operating system did not shutdown cleanly.
Reconstructing cache Metadata.
Please do not interrupt this process."

Everytime this process ends successfully and my computer starts back up. But the fact that I cant put my computer to sleep without it shutting down is frustrating.

I followed a previous post and followed these steps from the post:

Ran an extensive system test from F2

1. Hold the power button for at least five seconds to turn off the computer.

2. Turn on the computer and immediately press Esc repeatedly, about once every second.

When the menu appears, press the F2 key.

3. On the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics (UEFI) main menu, click System Tests.

4. Click Extensive Test.

5. Click Run once, or Loop until error.

While the test is running, the time remaining and test result for each component are

shown on the screen.

6. If a component fails a test, write down the failure ID (24-digit code) so you have it

available when you contact HP Customer Support. The information is also available in

Test Logs on the main menu.

The test passed except for this: "Primary: Logic State - No AC Power (1), Charge State - Not Available. I did an AC power test and it was fine. So  I ran a sfc /scannow on my computer after doing a system extensive test.

In Windows, search for Command Prompt. In the search results, right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator. Then click Yes.
In Command Prompt, type sfc /scannow. Make sure to include the space between sfc and the /.
Press Enter and wait while System File Checker scans for corrupted files.
When scanning is complete, the results are displayed on the screen.

The scan found corrupted files and couldnt replace them, so I used the Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM) tool. DISM checks the corrupted files; then downloads and replaces the files using Windows Update.
In Windows, open a web browser.
   NOTE:
You need to be connected to the Internet to use DISM.
In Windows, search for Command Prompt. In the search results, right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator. Then click Yes.
In Command Prompt, type dism.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth. Make sure to include the space before each / in the command line.
Press Enter and wait while DISM works. This might take several minutes.
If DISM finds corrupted files, it replaces them using Windows Update. If this occurs, after DISM is finished, restart your computer and see if the performance has improved.

I did this and it seemed to not fix the issue. I made sure I downloaded and install the latest version of HP Support Assistant using this link.

Also ensured that my Windows Updates were up to date.

Any other thing I could try?

Hello @wwilson94

Welcome to the HP Support Community. Thank you for choosing HP !

If I understand correctly, your computer gets this when trying to go into Sleep mode ?

  • Can you perform a new hardware diagnostics (F2) and try with the Fast test ?  Please, let me know the results from it.
  • Check this TKB artcile and follow all the steps in it. Note that it is a bit long and make sure you take your time.

Let me know how it goes.

I ran the fast test and everything passed. The only thing was the battery could not be tested due to being fully charged, ill try that again later. I followed the instructions from the link you sent me and everything has been ok, though its only been a couple of days. Will continue to monitor the issue. My next step is switching to hibernation mode instead of sleep mode. Thank you for the help!

Shortly after my original response, my computer did the same thing. I left it open for a period of time and instead of going to sleep, it wouldnt load up. So I turned the computer off and back on and was met with the "The operating system did not shutdown cleanly" message. Will try to switch to hibernation mode.

Hello @wwilson94

Thank you for your update. You are welcome !

Yes, please make sure you do follow all the steps written in the article to rule out potential issues.

Try hibernation as a last resort and also disable automatically going to Sleep mode (as per article).
