Hp 255
Microsoft Windows 7 (32-bit)

Hello

My nephew bougth this used laptop. It says HP 255. Windows 10 was installed, but it was sooo slow, so he asked me to install windows 7. I made bootable usb and installed windows 7. But then i got the message: selected boot image did not authenticate. I searched for solution and i found that i have to enable legacy support. But when i do, screen goes black and it does not boot. I have to take it apart and disconect cmos battery to reset bios. Nothing helps. I tried it for 5 times already. Is there any solution or should i just throw it out of the window? 🙂

Thank you

Hello @patrik6633

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Best would be to install Windows 7 while the PC is already in Legacy mode (Secure Boot off, Legacy CSM mode on).

Therefore, if Legacy boot is ON and Secure Boot is OFF, you should reinstall Windows.

Please, let me know if this works for you and if you need details how to do these steps.

I already tried to boot windows usb and then format and delete all partitions. Then i enabled legacy, but result is the same as before. Black screen until i remove cmos battery . 😞

I understood you from the first time. 🙂

You should first enable Legacy mode and then attempt to reinstall Windows 7.

i understand you, but everytime i enable legacy, screen goes black  until i reset bios. Or should i format disk using other computer or how?

If you go to BIOS, enable Legacy mode, save the changes and exit,

then, are you able to power off the machine

  • by pressing and holding the power-on button for 5-10 seconds until the completely powers off
  • If the computer a removable battery, you may try to get it out, wait and then insert it back in >> https://support.hp.com/ie-en/document/c01684768
  • Try to start the computer again

As soon as you press the power-on button, immediately begin hitting the Esc button (like tap-tap-tap) before any logo appears. This should open a HP Startup Menu

You may choose F9 option to select a bootable device there (in case the USB pen drive with Windows installation media has previously been plugged in)

Does this work for you ?

Sorry for late answer but i was not at home for whole week. I just did what you wrote but result is still the same. I enabled legacy, saved and exit just like you wrote. Removed battery and then tried to start the computer. Result is the same as all 10 times i tried it before. Blank screen, tried to tap esc as i power up computer but doesnt work. Again i have to remove cmos battery to be able to acces bios. Any other solutions? Thank you for your help.

How do you access BIOS, via F10  (instead of Esc) ?

  • Can you try updating the BIOS following the steps here >> https://support.hp.com/ca-en/document/c00042629
Make sure you read the steps under "Update the BIOS when Windows does not start"
  • If this is not possible due to lack of UEFI partition for HP addins, could you try to perform the above steps but this time begin hitting F9 (instead of Esc) to load boot options ?
  • If you are able, please format the HDD using another PC or by trying to boot this PC (F9) from another OS ?
  • Could you give me the full HP product model and product number (p/n) - information how to find them externally of F1 can be found here >> http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c00033108

Looking forward to your reply.
