Hi @daggwood,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
If you're having trouble using the Tool Recovery feature and are unable to gain administrator access, it can be due to various reasons such as permission issues, account settings, or software conflicts. Here’s a guide to troubleshoot and resolve this issue:
1. Check User Account Permissions
Verify Administrator Rights:
- Windows 10/11: Press Win + X and select Computer Management. Under Local Users and Groups, select Users. Ensure your account is listed as an Administrator.
Switch Accounts:
- Log In as Administrator: If you have multiple accounts, try logging in with an account that has administrative rights.
2. Run Tool Recovery with Elevated Privileges
Run as Administrator:
- Locate Tool Recovery: Find the Tool Recovery application or executable file.
- Run as Administrator: Right-click on the executable file and select Run as administrator. This may prompt you for administrator credentials.
3. Check for User Account Control (UAC) Settings
Adjust UAC Settings:
- Open UAC Settings: Type UAC in the Start menu search and select Change User Account Control settings.
- Adjust Slider: Ensure the slider is set to notify you when programs try to make changes to your computer. This setting should be at least Notify me only when programs try to make changes to my computer.
4. Verify Tool Recovery Installation
Reinstall Tool Recovery:
- Uninstall Tool Recovery: Go to Control Panel > Programs and Features, find Tool Recovery in the list, and uninstall it.
- Reinstall Tool Recovery: Download the latest version from the official website or install media, and follow the installation instructions. Make sure to install it as an administrator.
5. Check for Software Conflict
- Temporarily Disable: Some security software can interfere with administrative functions. Temporarily disable third-party antivirus or firewall software and try running the Tool Recovery again.
- Ensure that there are no other recovery or system management tools running simultaneously that might be conflicting with Tool Recovery.
6. Use Windows Recovery Options
Access Recovery Options:
- Restart in Safe Mode: Restart your computer and enter Safe Mode by pressing F8 or Shift + F8 during startup.
- Advanced Startup: Alternatively, go to Settings > Update & Security > Recovery, and under Advanced startup, select Restart now. Choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options.
Run System Tools:
- Command Prompt: In the recovery options, open Command Prompt and run system file checks:
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
