spectre x360
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hey,

I'm having a bit of trouble with my new spectre, occasionally when waking from sleep (once a week maybe) it goes to blue screen with,

Stopcode: PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA

And,

What Failed: usbvideo.sys

Today I realised that the fault also occurs identically, if I switch the webcam off and on with the camera app open, not every time but if you click it off and on a few times it all ways does the same blue screen as it does occasionally when waking from sleep.

Any solutions?

Thanks.

That is if I physically switch the camera off and on with the camera switch on the side of the laptop.

Hi @Ragnarok88

Welcome to the HP Support Community. I'd be happy to assist you with the Blue Screen Error.

To better assist you - Were there any recent changes made to the computer?

While you respond to that, try running a System File Checker -

1) Select Start, and in the search box, enter Command Prompt. Press and hold (or right-click) Command Prompt (Desktop app) from the search results and select Run as administrator.
2) Enter DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth (note the spaces before each "/").
3) Enter sfc /scannow (note the space between "sfc" and "/").

Also, try updating the computer -

Step 1 Windows Updates troubleshooter -
Click on this link to run Windows Updates troubleshooter.

Step 2 Windows Updates -
1) In the search box, type and open Windows Updates.
2) Check for updates.
3) If the updates are available, click on install and restart the computer.

Step 3 HP Support Assistant Updates -
1) In the search box, type and open HP Support Assistant.
2) Check for updates.
3) If the updates are available, click on install and restart the computer.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.

Hey, thanks for the reply.

I have completed your instructions and the blue screen still occurs if I switch the camera off and on with the camera app open, so I assume it still will occasionally on waking from sleep and using windows hello, I think it has always done it from new, but only once every couple of weeks, the laptop is only a couple of months old.

Since I posted the original post, I have also done a system restore, with no change to the problem..

@Ragnarok88

Run a Windows Power troubleshooter -

1) In Windows, search for and open the Control Panel.

2) In the Control Panel Search field, type troubleshooting.

3) Click Troubleshooting.

4) In the System and Security area, click Improve power usage.

5) Click Next to run the troubleshooting tool.

If the issue still persists, try disabling the automatic paging file size management -

1) In Windows, type advanced system settings into Search, and then click View advanced system settings in the search results.
2) Under Performance, click the Settings button.

3) Click the Advanced tab, and then click the Change button under Virtual Memory.

4) Unselect Automatically manage paging file size for all drives and select System Managed Size if it is not already selected. This is the preferred setting.

5) Restart the computer.

You may also try testing the hardware using these steps -

1) Hold the power button for at least five seconds to turn off the computer.
2) Turn on the computer and immediately press Esc repeatedly, about once every second. When the menu appears, press the F2 key.
3) On the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics (UEFI) main menu, click System Tests.
4) Click Extensive Test.

Let me know.

Hey,

I have now completed those instructions, with no change to the issue.

And the hardware test came back as all passes.

@Ragnarok88 Here's a few things that should help:

A common culprit in usbvideo.sys blue screen errors is a bad stick of RAM. When RAM fails, it can cause the system to become unstable. If a new memory is added to your computer, you can remove it to check if it's the cause of your usbvideo.sys error. If the error disappears after the removal, then this new memory is either bad or incompatible with your computer. If there is nothing new added to your computer, then you can test your memory to see if it's bad or not.

Steps:

a. Press Windows and R keys to bring up Run.

windows r

b. In the dialogue box, type mdsched.exe and press Enter key.

mdsched

c. Click Restart now and check for problems (recommended).

windows memory diagnostic

d. Now Windows Memory Diagnostic is checking your memory.

checking memory

When the test completes and finds any problem, it's likely that your usbvideo.sys error is caused by a bad RAM and then you will need to replace a new one.

Method 2: Do a System Restore.

System Restore is another useful utility integrated in Windows to help users revert their system files, installed applications, Windows registry and settings to that of a previous point of time. It's often used to fix problems like usbvideo.sys error caused by unexpected change made by a new program installation or abnormal Windows behaviors.

Method 3: Run a virus scan.

Malware infection is one of the most popular cause of various computer problems like usbvideo.sys error. Computer malware can make their way into the system, change system settings and corrupt system files. When this happens, Microsoft® Windows® Operating System and Windows becomes more prone to usbvideo.sys error and even malfunction.

Steps:

a. Restart your system into Safe Mode with Networking.

b. Open your antivirus or antispyware program.

c. Run a full scan for your system.

d. After the scan completes, either quarantine or remove any detected malware.

e. Restart your system.

Method 4: Install Windows updates.

Computers and computer software can quickly become out-dated, so Microsoft keeps releasing updates in order to improve their security and fix technical glitches. Your usbvideo.sys error may be fixed after you install all latest Windows updates.

Hey,

I have tried all the things you suggested, except replacing ram, as I have previously mentioned in my posts here, the computer is a nearly new top spec Spectre 15” I don’t think the ram is replace able so obviously I won’t be replacing that, the windows memory test comes back with no problems.

I’m starting to think this is an issue with the webcam it self as no one seems to have a solution, so I think I will be contacting the HP store to request a replacement, as this laptop has done this from new, once every couple of weeks, when using windows hello.

@Ragnarok88 if none of those steps helped, this could be a hardware malfunction as you've concluded and I suggest you talk to HP support and discuss your options, follow the below steps to get started:

1) Click on this link - http://www.hp.com/contacthp/

2) Click on Sign-in or select the product using the below step:

3) Enter the serial of your device.

4) Select the country from the drop-down.

5) Click on "Show Options".

Fill the web-form, to populate a case number and phone number for yourself!

Also, if you are having trouble navigating through the above options, it's most likely because the device is out of warranty, if yes? please send me a private message with the region you are contacting us from,
