Hi @Bloosm,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I understand how concerning it is when your computer reports that it cannot find the storage drive or the Windows operating system, preventing you from accessing your files.

Incorrect BIOS settings commonly cause this issue, a storage drive that is not being detected, or missing storage controller drivers during Windows installation.

Step 1: Reset the BIOS to Default Settings

Resetting the BIOS can restore storage settings that may have changed.

  1. Turn off the computer and wait 5 seconds.

  2. Turn it back on and repeatedly press F10 to enter the BIOS Setup.

  3. Press F9 to load the default settings.

  4. Press F10 to save and exit, then restart the computer.

Step 2: Run HP Hardware Diagnostics

This checks whether the storage drive is being detected and is functioning correctly.

  1. Restart the computer and repeatedly press F2 to open HP PC Hardware Diagnostics | HP® Support.

  2. Select Hard Drive Check and run the Extensive Test.

  3. If the drive fails the test or is not detected, it may require service or replacement.

Step 3: Install the Storage Driver (Windows Installation Only)

If the error appears while installing Windows on newer Intel-based systems:

  1. Download the Intel RST VMD storage driver from Official HP® Support.

  2. Copy the driver to your Windows installation USB.

  3. During Windows Setup, select Load driver and install the storage driver so the SSD or hard drive is detected.

If the drive is detected after these steps, Windows should boot normally or become available for installation. If the drive is still not detected, please let us know your HP computer model and whether this error appears during startup or while installing Windows.

Take care and have a good day.

I'm an HP Employee.
