Yes, you will need to install Windows on the SSD.

They come with no operating system and one does not automatically transfer it to the SSD.

You can clone the existing operating system from the hard drive to the SSD, but you need cloning software to do that, such as Macrium Reflect.

Macrium Software | Reflect Free Edition

You want the software on the left side of the page under the Backup at Home section.

Hi:

With the 1 TB 2.5" hard drive disconnected, you can use the HP cloud recovery tool to create a bootable USB recovery drive that will reinstall W10, the drivers and the software that originally came with your notebook on the SSD.

Here is an info link for how to use that utility...

Then you can reconnect the 2.5" drive.

If you don't disconnect the 2.5" drive, the cloud recovery tool will reinstall W10 on the 2.5" drive and not the SSD.

You will need to remove Windows from the 2.5" drive, or the notebook will always want to boot from the 2.5" drive first and not the SSD.

Memory...you can install the memory and it has no effect on Windows.

No need to worry about reinstalling Windows when you upgrade the memory.
