15-bs192od : 100% disk usage on powerup?

Similar to the below link: I have a 15-bs192od

on powerup: it shows 100% disk usage for several minutes, then quiesces

this has been since I bought the thing in 2018

I also updated recently to Windows 11: same behaviour



The link, below, is not helpful.

I have tried pretty much everything: disk cleanup / defrag, disabling effectively all SW, etc

It's as if this laptop is not throttling disk usage, and ties up the machine every time it powers up



Can anyone suggest anything new?

It is quite a powerful machine.

What I would do would be to replace the Hard Drive with a 2.5" SATA3 SSD and reinstall the OS. It will give a great boost in the everyday performance of the machine

Naturally it is OK for normal daily works with 8GB of RAM and an i7 processor. Only its HDD is a bit slow.  You say "this has been since I bought the thing in 2018", sorry I have to say: I don't believe this.

Now, the slow HDD may slow everything down even after upgrade to Windows 11 therefore the following 2 upgrades would speed up your machine a lot more

(a) RAM: You can add SAME existing 8GB to slot 2 or use the following RAM (will run at 2133MHz)

(b) STORAGE: add 1TB or 2TB of M.2 SATA SSD to your machine then move Windows and programs to SSD, keep existing HDD for storage only. There are many M.2 SATA SSD's around, for example

Thanks David. You are absolutely right; replacing the 5400 rpm HDD with the recommended SDD fixed the performance problem. This laptop is now blazingly fast!

I think all my other devices have 7200 rpm HDDs and I don't see such horrible performance as this 5400 rpm HDD.

Yes, placing an SSD in a powerful machine really gives a noticeable improvement in everyday performance.

Probably the old HDD had hardware or installation-related problems. In any case, it is just worth it to replace it with an SSD.

You could also do this on your other machines.
