HP Hardware Diagnostics allows me to select a thermal profile but doesn't clearly explain what each of them does. Do they correspond to what's available in the HP Command Center, which I have seen defined online, or are the parameters somewhat different. The available modes are Balanced, Turbo, and Cooler. I assume Turbo somehow ramps up the CPU and spins the fans more frequently, and that Cooler does the opposite, but 1) how does it do that and 2) where can I find more granular information? This is like driving a car that only has "Slow, Normal, and Fast" instead of an accelerator pedal.

As a former tech writer, it's pretty annoying how so much HP-supplied software is basically undocumented.

Hi @dbookbinder,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to assist you.

I see that you are looking for information related to thermal profile for your Laptop.

Kindly refer to this link for information related to thermal profile on the HP command center and it is default to the profiles set on the command center.

Unfortunately, the application does not allow to edit or make any changes to the profiles.

You haven't really answered my question.

I've already read the information in the link you provided, and I've tried to make changes with HP Command Center. It's not clear that HP Command Center actually changes anything, as there is no difference in temperature or performance. with any of the choices. Also, it has four choices, but it looks like my computer only actually has three thermal profiles, based on HP Diagnostics.

I'm asking if the thermal settings can be changed in HP Diagnostics, rather than just tested, and if they can, exactly what those settings change. If they can't be changed in HP Diagnostics, how else can they be changed. Right now, the computer runs a little hot and I'd like to prevent that from happening by accessing the actual "cool" thermal setting or its equivalent in, say, the Intel tuning utility.

Hi @dbookbinder,

Unfortunately, there is no option to make any changes to the preset profiles you find on the HP command center.

However, if you dont find any difference after selecting the desired thermal profile.

Uninstall and reinstall the HP command center and test it again.

As I said, I'm not asking about HP Command Center. Forget about HP Command Center.

I'm asking:

1. Whether selecting one of the three thermal profiles in HP Diagnostics actually sets that thermal profile or just determines that it's capable of functioning.

2. What, specifically, do the various  profiles actually adjust, if I can select them. CPU power? Fan maximum speeds? Something else? There seem be be very few parameters that can be changed on the i7-1355U cpu on my computer, and none of the fan control apps I've tried even detect the fans.
