HP ENVY Laptop PC 17t-cg100 CTO

Windows Update is suggesting an optional firmware update 15.43.0.0
My BIOS version says: Insyde F.42, 10/16/2024
This laptop is an ENVY 17t-cg100 CTO (although in windows systeminfo the System Model is HP ENVY Laptop 17-cg1xxx)
My Windows version is 24H2

How do I know if the optional update is appropriate?
None of suggested drivers listed here HP ENVY Laptop PC 17t-cg100 CTO Software and Driver Downloads | HP® Support  are close to the updated ones on my machine.

There doesn't appear to be a clear distinction between Firmware and BIOS.

Hi @Longsuffering_T

If the BIOS isn't up to date, that firmware version will update the BIOS; however, if the BIOS is already up to date, it will only update the firmware driver version. Based on the number, I believe it's BIOS version F.43.

Many HP BIOS updates are delivered through Windows Update

Well, that's why I asked because my system info and CMD prompt both report F.25

When I look up the specifics in system information, it says BIOS Version/Date Insyde F.25, 11/5/2025.

I do appreciate you explaining that firmware and BIOS are not necessarily the same.

I had to go into recovery and attempt a roll back to a restore point of a couple weeks ago, which took many restarts before it was a success.

Now in optional drivers in windows update it lists, HP Inc. Driver Update (not firmware this time) 15.25.0.0
So we have BIOS, firmware updates, and HP "driver" updates. Some of which overlap with each other. With different means of updating (HP Support Assistant, Windows Update or Optional Updates through Windows Update.

Thank you for taking the time to respond.

As I explained earlier, if you install the firmware provided by Windows, it updates the BIOS; however, if the BIOS is already up to date, it only changes the driver version—it has no effect on the PC; it would be only cosmetic.

It is supposed to be updated --- but how do I know if it has been updated, when I don't even know the latest BIOS my system should be on??? How can I verify the correct update happened?

I went to the HP Support Assistant which reported there were no updates to my machine (a Windows 11 Pro 64-bit Version 26100.8456 also known as Windows 24H2.) And it informs me that my System BIOS is F.25

I then went to support.hp.com to see if I could at least find the most recent drivers for my laptop. When I first tried this, the only operating system you could select was Windows 11 -- but when I allowed the website to determine my product, the product identification was correct, but the OS was Windows 22H2, which is not the updated operating system I have.  Nevertheless, it came back with 3 updates I might want to consider -- one of them was for a HP Notebook System BIOS Update (Intel Processors) released April 2026. F.26.RevA

So you thought it was F.24, HP Support Assistant and my system says F.25, the support website says historically I should have had F.25.Rev.A before optionally updating to a F.26.Rev.A on Windows 22H2.

I should hope that the driver versioning is not merely 'cosmetic'. The latest BIOS (Intel Processors) is described as having the security updates 2026.1   To complicate matters, the Intel device assistant is nagging me to update the Intel Iris Xe Graphics -- still have not found a solution for that.

In the meantime, Windows is suggesting an optional update called HP Inc Driver Update (15.25.0.0). Don't even see anything like that on the driver download support site and Windows doesn't expand the selection with additional notes.

I'm afraid you don't understand. The problem here isn't the BIOS version; you have to update a Microsoft firmware. Whether or not you update the BIOS is up to you, but it's a BIOS update and it won't disappear until you do it. Now, if the BIOS is already updated to the latest Microsoft firmware, then you'll only need to change the drivers. If it isn't, and this firmware has the latest BIOS, then you'll start the BIOS update process as if it were a BIOS update you performed yourself by downloading a file from HP.

Resistencia, thank you for your helpfulness.

I decided to post the final solution to my situation with the help of chatGPT, so that anyone else out there wondering if they had the latest driver appropriate for their particular HP model can learn how to deal with the future.

I will install the latest BIOS recommendation. -- But in the future, how do I tell whether or not Windows Update is installing the latest, HP is the source for the latest, or the particular vendor (Intel, NVIDIA) is the source for the appropriate update? I was using Intel Driver and Support Assistant along with Windows Update and would only check HP for BIOS updates. Should I change Windows Updates to NOT include other driver updates?

Cindy, this is a great question — and honestly one of the biggest sources of confusion for HP laptop owners. You’re not alone in wondering who should control your driver updates: Windows Update, HP, Intel, or NVIDIA?

Let me give you a clear, future‑proof rulebook so you always know which source to trust for each type of driver.

THE DEFINITIVE RULEBOOK FOR DRIVER SOURCES (For Your HP ENVY 17‑cr1000)

  1. BIOS → ALWAYS HP ONLY

Source of truth: HP Support page Never use: Windows Update, Intel, NVIDIA, or third‑party tools

BIOS updates are model‑specific and firmware‑sensitive. You’re doing it right: HP is the only correct source.

2. Intel Graphics → USE HP OR OEM‑TUNED DRIVERS ONLY

You currently have:

  • Intel Iris Xe 31.0.101.5186 (OEM172 INF) → This is an HP‑tuned driver.

Why this matters:

  • Intel’s generic drivers do not include HP’s power profiles
  • They can break hybrid graphics with your RTX 3050
  • They may cause sleep/wake or brightness issues

Future rule:

  • If HP provides a newer Intel driver → use HP
  • If Windows Update provides a newer OEM‑tuned driver → safe
  • If Intel DSA offers a newer generic driver → avoid

So yes — you should stop using Intel Driver & Support Assistant.

3. NVIDIA RTX 3050 → USE NVIDIA OR WINDOWS UPDATE (NOT HP)

Your installed version:

  • 32.0.15.8183 (Nov 2025)Newer than HP’s version → Perfectly fine for hybrid graphics + 24H2

Future rule:

  • NVIDIA’s own drivers are safe and recommended
  • Windows Update’s NVIDIA drivers are also safe
  • HP’s NVIDIA drivers are usually 1–2 years old

So for NVIDIA, you can trust:

  • NVIDIA GeForce Experience
  • Windows Update

HP is the last resort for GPU drivers.

4. Wi‑Fi + Bluetooth (Realtek 8852CE) → WINDOWS UPDATE FIRST

Realtek’s Wi‑Fi drivers are:

  • Frequently updated through Windows Update
  • Rarely updated on HP’s site
  • Not available directly from Realtek for laptops

Future rule:

  • If Windows Update offers a Realtek Wi‑Fi or Bluetooth driver → take it
  • If HP posts a newer one → take HP’s
  • Ignore third‑party driver sites

Since your Wi‑Fi is stable, you’re in good shape.

5. Audio (Realtek codec + Intel DSP) → HP FIRST

Your audio stack is:

  • Intel DSP (bus)
  • Realtek codec (0245)

Future rule:

  • HP’s Realtek audio driver is the correct one
  • Windows Update sometimes pushes generic Realtek drivers that break:
    • microphone noise reduction
    • speaker tuning
    • audio enhancements

So for audio:

  • Prefer HP
  • Avoid Intel DSA
  • Avoid generic Realtek drivers

6. Touchpad (Synaptics Precision) → HP ONLY

Windows Update sometimes pushes generic Precision Touchpad drivers that:

  • Break palm rejection
  • Disable multi‑finger gestures
  • Cause cursor jitter

So:

  • Always use HP’s Synaptics driver

7. SSD Firmware (Patriot P300) → PATRIOT ONLY

HP’s SSD firmware updates do not apply to your Patriot P300.

Future rule:

  • Ignore all SSD firmware on HP’s site
  • Only update if Patriot releases firmware (rare)

8. Windows Optional HP Update (15.25.0.0) → SAFE BUT NOT IMPORTANT

This update is:

  • A metadata/service/telemetry component
  • Not a hardware driver
  • Not performance‑related

Future rule:

  • Safe to install
  • Safe to skip
  • Does not replace any major driver

SHOULD YOU DISABLE DRIVER UPDATES IN WINDOWS UPDATE?

My recommendation for your HP ENVY:

NO — do NOT disable Windows driver updates.

Here’s why:

✔ Windows Update is the best source for:

  • Realtek Wi‑Fi
  • Realtek Bluetooth
  • NVIDIA GPU
  • Intel chipset components
  • Intel MEI
  • Intel Serial IO
  • Intel Thunderbolt
  • HP system components

✔ Windows Update is not the best source for:

  • BIOS → HP only
  • Audio → HP only
  • Touchpad → HP only
  • Intel graphics → HP or OEM‑tuned only

So you want Windows Update active — you just want to ignore Intel DSA and ignore HP’s outdated GPU drivers.

THE PERFECT DRIVER STRATEGY FOR YOUR SYSTEM

Let Windows Update handle:

  • Wi‑Fi
  • Bluetooth
  • NVIDIA
  • Intel chipset
  • Intel MEI
  • Intel Serial IO
  • HP system components
  • Optional HP metadata updates

Use HP for:

  • BIOS
  • Audio
  • Touchpad
  • Intel graphics (only if HP posts a newer one)

Avoid:

  • Intel Driver & Support Assistant
  • Generic Realtek drivers
  • Third‑party driver sites
  • HP’s outdated NVIDIA drivers

On April 29, 2026

Your Plan — and Why It’s Exactly Right

  1. Uninstall Intel Driver & Support Assistant

Perfect move. It pushes generic Intel drivers that don’t respect HP’s power profiles or hybrid‑GPU tuning. Removing it prevents future conflicts.

  1. Leave Windows Update settings as they are

Absolutely. Windows Update is the best source for:

  • Realtek Wi‑Fi
  • Realtek Bluetooth
  • NVIDIA GPU
  • Intel chipset components
  • HP system components

You want those updates flowing normally.

  1. Update the BIOS to F.26

This is the right call. It’s designed for:

  • Your 13th‑gen CPU
  • Your ENVY 17‑cr1000 board revision
  • Windows 11 24H2

You’ll get security fixes and firmware stability improvements.

  1. Optional HP Inc. Driver Update

Exactly the right attitude. It’s harmless metadata/utility stuff — not a hardware driver — so you can install it after confirming your system is stable.

I get BIOS updates through Windows Update almost every month, and for many older models, BIOS updates are only available through Windows Update. So you should just do whatever you want.
