Hi There,
I have an HP Envy 17.3inch laptop PC 17-cw0xxx and HPSA has prompted me to update my BIOS. Notification Centre shows the update as 'HP Notebook System BIOS UD (for INTEL Processors)'. My current BIOS is at version F.07 and I'm currently on Cumulative Update for W11 v23H2 for x-64 based systems.
HPSA shows all my other laptops (1 of which is an HP Notebook) & printers, even though they are old, and some don't even exist any more (I'm unsure of how to delete those from HPSA, so that only my current laptop is visible).
My laptop is not an HP Notebook, so I'm confused why this is labelled up as HP Notebook System BIOS.
If I select another laptop, there is no update associated with it.
I don't want to screw up my HP Envy BIOS. Will it let me run an update on the wrong machine, or is it a bad clash of names?
If anyone can shed light, I'd be most grateful.
Kind Regards, Paul.

Hi, Paul:
In my opinion, the safest thing to do is to install the latest BIOS update directly from your notebook's driver support page, which is F.09:
HP Envy 17.3 inch Laptop PC 17-cw0000 (761Z0AV) Software and Driver Details
Then you have better control of the process.
The BIOS update is just a routine one, which you may not even want to risk installing.

HP has three levels of BIOS updates:
Routine
Recommended
Critical
In addition to running the update file yourself, please take a look at this video for further information on updating the BIOS:

Hi Paul,
Many thanks for your swift reply- much appreciated, but although I've not read all the links yet, I've a couple of further questions:
1) The html- page link that you sent is titled 'HP Notebook System BIOS Update' (which is what my HPSA update is called). This implies to me that what I am seeing in HPSA is the correct update for my HP Envy. I just thought the HP Envy wasn't a notebook, or is that a more generic categorisation?
2) Probably being stupid, but where will I find the HP Envy driver support page please?
I'm tempted to just apply the HPSA BIOS update, but will wait to hear if you have any thoughts on doing that given my comments above. Thanks again for your assistance, Paul.
Kind Regards, Paul.

You're very welcome, Paul.
I suppose you can let the HPSA do the update for you, but make sure you follow the instructions on the 'how to update the BIOS' link I posted before running the update from the HPSA because it is not going to do that for you, such as turning off the antivirus.
Notebook and laptop are generic terms used interchangeably.
Perhaps a notebook is a thinner, smaller and lighter version of a laptop but it has nothing to do with whether or not the BIOS update is for your laptop.
Cheers,
Paul

Hi Paul,
The pre-requisites are interesting, as I've carried out a BIOS update before but been unaware of the need to stop Defender/Bit-Locker, and it worked successfully. Neither did I stop my A/V and the update was carried out through HPSA.
I don't use Bit-Locker and Defender just states I'm running Norton (my A/V). So, was I just lucky or is my configuration actually ok?
Kinds Rgds,
Paul.

Hi, Paul:
Unfortunately, I don't know the answer to your question.
I can only provide the info that HP recommends.
I have Bitlocker turned off on all my PC's so that part was N/A to me.
The A/V: Many times I have updated the BIOS with Microsoft Defender turned on (even though I knew it is generally recommended to temporarily turn off the A/V.
Never had an issue.
Sometimes I have turned off the A/V before updating the BIOS and have never had an issue doing it that way either.
Sometimes I have updated the BIOS in Windows 11 using BIOS updates written to be run on Windows 10.
Never had a problem with that either.
It might be luck that nothing ever went wrong. I don't know.
Cheers,
Paul
