The support Assistant suggested an update of BIOS to F.19. I have done BIOS updates before but this time I got error message 088F1F19 and message that there was not enough space to perform the update. However I have over 400 GB free on my C:\ drive. I have tried several times with computer restarts inbetween but the result is the same.

The error you encountered means that your EFI system partition (ESP), not the C: drive, doesn't have enough free space for the BIOS update.
You either need to enlarge the ESP size or delete some files on ESP.
If you updated BIOS before, the update may have created an HP folder in the EFI partition and stored BIOS files there. If so, you may be able to delete them safely to free up space.
The ESP is a hidden partition. If you assign a letter to it and run notepad.exe in command prompt, you can view the content of the \EFI\HP folder in File Explorer and delete files easily without a use of command prompt.
This thread shows how to find stored BIOS files you can possibly delete to free up space for a BIOS update.
If you find the EFI\HP folder doesn't have any BIOS filed stored, you can delete the HP folder. See this thread where the person deleted the HP folder.
