When my battery is discharged a little i.e. it remains more than 95%, it never reaches 100% again, when charging. However, when I discharge it a bit more, i.e. it reached 90% and then recharged, it reaches 100%. Is it normal profile, or a fault, or system setting that can be modified?

Hi @arshadahsan,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

What you are experiencing is generally considered normal behavior on many HP notebooks and is usually related to the HP battery health protection features, such as Adaptive Battery Optimizer or Battery Health Manager. These features help reduce long-term battery wear by slightly adjusting charging behavior when the battery is already near full capacity.

For example:

  • If the battery drops only slightly (such as 95–99%), the system may intentionally stop charging before 100%.
  • If the battery drops further (around 90% or below), charging typically resumes normally to 100%.

Please try the steps below to verify and restore the battery settings.

Step 1: Restore BIOS Defaults

  1. Shut down the notebook.
  2. Turn it ON and immediately tap the F10 key repeatedly to enter BIOS.
  3. In BIOS, press F9 to load default settings.
  4. Select Yes
  5. Press F10 to save and exit.

This resets battery management settings to HP-recommended defaults.

Step 2: Check Adaptive Battery Optimizer / Battery Health Manager

  1. Restart the notebook and press F10 repeatedly.
  2. Go to:
    • Configuration tab, or
    • Advanced tab.
  3. Look for:
    • Adaptive Battery Optimizer, or
    • Battery Health Manager
  4. Set:
    • Adaptive Battery Optimizer = Enabled
    • OR select Let HP Manage My Battery Health

If available, avoid selecting:

  • Maximize My Battery Health
because this may intentionally limit charging behavior.

Step 3: Run HP Battery Diagnostics

  1. Turn OFF the notebook.
  2. Turn it ON and tap Esc repeatedly.
  3. Press F2 for HP Hardware Diagnostics.
  4. Go to:
Component Tests → Power → Battery → Run Once

If the battery test passes, the battery is functioning normally.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!

I'm an HP Employee.
