compaq nx9010
Microsoft Windows XP

Hi. I bought a used compaq nx9010 laptop. Unfortunately the hard drive appears to have been zero'd, and I don't have the recovery CDs. Because of this, I am probably missing certain programs which causes parts of the laptop to misbehave.

The first problem with it is that stand-by doesn't work. It appears to successfully write the session to memory, but when I want to use the laptop again I press the power button and it gets stuck without even turning the screen on. Oh, now that I'm thinking about it, perhaps the "resume" battery is dead? I had an older laptop that had a battery like that. It had the main battery, BIOS battery and resume battery.

The second problem is that the indicator light of the infrared modem is always on, and nothing happens when I press the modem's button. Is this normal? What are the indicator and button for then?

Hi:

According to the service manual, there is the main battery and the CMOS battery.

Service Manual (hp.com)

If the CMOS battery was bad, you would have to set the date and time in the BIOS any time the main battery was completely dead.

Did you install the XP drivers from your notebook's support page?

When I try to access the page, it does not give me any options to select.

It could be that HP is in the process of deactivating support for that model series, since it must be around 15 years old.

This reputable 3rd party website has XP drivers for your notebook.

HP Compaq nx9010 drivers (driverscollection.com)

I noticed some drivers that may need to be installed, besides the main ones (audio, graphics, network, touchpad, etc).

I think it's around 20 years old.

I see, so it does not have a resume battery. Perhaps it uses the main battery to keep the data in memory. Mine is dead, so that would be why stand-by does not work.

So at least some third-party providers are safe? That's good to know.

If the drivers were once available and they aren't anymore, then it could be because they have been removed. Very disappointing, I understand that HP has to make money but sabotaging older products is a pretty shady way to keep the business going. Aren't they proud of their history and of the great products that they have put out? It's not my fault if the older products were too good and the newer ones can't compete with them, hehe..

I'll try to install those drivers now or when I'll have the time.

Yes, that site is my go-to site for drivers on PC's that HP has quit supporting.

If you don't trust the site, most of the drivers are still available on the HP FTP site.

You have to use Internet Explorer to access the site.

ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/

What you do is to select the driver you want on the 3rd party website.

You will get to the download button with the driver file on it (sp#####).

Look up that number on the FTP site and download it directly from HP.

Since I trust the site, I usually don't do that too much anymore.
