Hello,

My laptop recently updated automatically and after the update I can't change the screen brightness. The shortcut keyboard keys don't work to change the brightness although the volume keys and other shortcuts keys do. When I go to 'Display Settings' the slider brightness bar isn't there.

I also tried updating the display adapters in 'Device Manager' however, the 'Display Adapter' folder is not showing up.

Any recommendations on what needs to be updated in order to change the brightness?

Thanks

Thank you for posting on the HP Support Community.

Don't worry as I'll be glad to help, I have a few troubleshooting steps we could try to fix the issue:

Firstly, perform Windows Update and HP Support Assistant: ( do not skip any troubleshooting steps if you feel steps are repeating )

To check for updates now, select the Start button, and then go to Settings  > Update & security  > Windows Update, and select Check for updates.

Install updates from HP Support Assistant: Go to Download HP Support Assistant to install the tool.

  1. To open the HP Support Assistant, double-click the HP Support Assistant icon https://support.hp.com/doc-images/932/c05040382.jpg.
  2. Click My devices in the top menu, and then click Updates in the My PC or My notebook pane.
  3. Click Check for updates and messages to scan for new updates.
  4. Review the list of updates. Updates with a yellow information icon are recommended. Updates with a blue information icon are optional.
  5. Click the update name for a description, version number, and file size.
  6. Select the box next to any updates you want to install, and then click Download and install.

And, aslo run BIOS Update: Follow steps from the link: https://support.hp.com/in-en/document/c00042629

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance.

Hello,

I successfully updated all Windows updates and in the HP support assistant updates the Realtek Local Area Network (LAN) Driver failed to install.

I am still not able to change the brightness of the screen and also when I set the screen to automatically turn off it doesn't fully turn off and instead it just goes blank to black screen.

Also re the BIOS I have the latest one already updated.

Thank you for posting back.

Let's perform rollback the driver, follow the steps below:

  1. Press Windows + R on the desktop screen.
  2. Type devmgmt.msc and hit enter.
  3. Expand the display adapter and right-click on the driver and select properties.
  4. Navigate to the Driver tab and click on RollBack driver.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance.
