There are 2 main types of apps
(a) Using Windows Store: Open Windows Store and search for app you wish to install and click Install to get it to your machine.
(b) Other apps use exe files, you have to download from vendors then install to your machine
For example: You can download exe file from the following link and install to your machine to play video files. It's free

Note: In both cases not all apps are free, you have to pay for them.
