Is there any *indicator* that the number lock is on? I am constantly using the number pad only to find that I had inadvertently hit the number lock button earlier and I am using the arrows instead of the numbers! What a pain!

"Tone" method might work.
The "Num Lock" key must be included on the keyboard (some systems lack this key) and you must be able to hear the tone from the keyboard.
This method at least provides a quick-check - if something stops working, quickly tap the key to toggle.
Control Panel > icon view > Ease of Access
Make the keyboard easier to use
Under “Make it easier to type”
Check box “Turn on Toggle Keys”
Optional – Check box “Turn on Toggle Keys by holding down the NUM LOCK key for 5 seconds”
Click OK to save change and exit the menu
