Hi @LuxFux,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like your HP laptop's keyboard is experiencing a "key ghosting" or "key remapping" issue. This can occur due to software or hardware problems. Here's how you can troubleshoot and resolve it.
Test the Keyboard in Another Environment
- Open a text editor (e.g., Notepad) or your browser's address bar and test typing letters like N, B, or T to confirm if the problem persists outside the login fields.
- Restart your laptop and enter the BIOS or UEFI settings by pressing the appropriate key during startup (usually F2, Esc, or Delete). Check if the problem exists in the BIOS environment. If it doesn't, the issue is likely software-related.
Check Keyboard Layout Settings
- Ensure the keyboard layout matches your region:
- Windows:
- Press Windows + Spacebar to toggle between keyboard layouts.
- Go to Settings → Time & Language → Language & Region → Ensure the correct keyboard is selected.
- Mac OS:
- Go to System Settings → Keyboard → Input Sources and verify your layout.
- Windows:
Check Sticky Keys or Accessibility Settings
- Windows:
- Go to Settings → Ease of Access → Keyboard.
- Ensure Sticky Keys, Toggle Keys, and Filter Keys are turned off.
- Mac OS:
- Go to System Settings → Accessibility → Keyboard.
- Check if any accessibility options are enabled.
Update or Reinstall Keyboard Drivers
- Open Device Manager (press Windows + X and select it).
- Expand the Keyboards section, right-click your keyboard, and select Uninstall device.
- Restart your laptop; the driver will reinstall automatically.
- Check the HP website for the latest driver updates for your specific laptop model.
Test an External Keyboard
- Connect an external USB or Bluetooth keyboard. If it works correctly, the issue is with your laptop's built-in keyboard.

Scan for Malware or Keyboard Hijacking
- Run a full system scan with your antivirus or tools like Microsoft Defender Offline to rule out any malware causing input issues.
Perform a Clean Boot
- Windows:
- Press Windows + R, type msconfig, and press Enter.
- Go to the Services tab, check "Hide all Microsoft services," then click "Disable all."
- Go to the Startup tab, and open Task Manager to disable all startup items.
- Restart and test the keyboard.
- If the issue resolves, a third-party app may be interfering.
Hardware Check
- If none of the above works, your keyboard may have a hardware issue (e.g., a short circuit or liquid damage).
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
