I’m having an issue after replacing the motherboard in my EliteBook G8. Since the replacement, the fingerprint reader no longer works. In Device Manager it shows up with an exclamation mark.

Here’s what I’ve tried so far:

  • Uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers

  • Cleared the TPM

  • Verified the DMI configuration (looks fine, but I can’t reconfigure it again)

  • Fresh install of Windows 11

  • Registry cleanup

Device Manager points to: 01802400, DN_HAS_PROBLEM, DN_DISABLEABLE, DN_NT_ENUMERATOR, DN_NT_DRIVER

Unfortunately, nothing has worked so far.

Has anyone experienced this before or found a solution?

Thanks in advance!

Hello.

Start with upgrading the BIOS. The system board spare part has been lying on a shelf for several years and probably has a very early BIOS version. The HP firmware package contains not only the BIOS version but also firmware for many other devices such as fingerprint reader, webcam, USB controllers and so on. Your FP reader may have a much newer firmware not compatible with your old BIOS.

The firmware versions are kept in sync in the Firmware package - any time you decide to roll back the BIOS version, all the other devices are also re-flashed with whatever firmware comes with the same package as the BIOS.

If the BIOS update does not help,  continue with the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI Tool, direct download link here. Once installed, whenever you restart your computer, keep hitting F2 key when HP Logo is shown to launch the diagnostics.

In the Diagnostics,  select Component Tests -> Fingerprint test. The functionality test is very simple, asking you to just swipe any finger.

It the test fails, your computer has a hardware problem.

1. Check that the fingerprint reader cable is seated properly - reinsert it on both ends of the cable.

2. Inspect the cable for any punctures and such. Replace cable

3. The FP reader socket or its traces on the replaced system board may be faulty. Replace system board.

4. The FP reader itself may have developed a fault when the system board was replaced. Replace FP reader.

If your old system board is still working, test the FP reader with it.
