Good morning,

the notebook has problems with the touch pad which completely randomly stops working. We formatted it and reinstalled Windows 11 version 24h2, but the problem was not resolved. In "Device Management" there is a triangle on "HID I2C Device" but the drivers are all updated. The problem appears to have arisen when the PC switched from the 23h2 version to the 24h2 version. The bios has also been updated to the latest version. What can I do? Do you have any feedback on this? Thank you.

Hi @Andrea_ZPB,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

The issue with the touchpad on your HP Notebook 14 is likely related to a compatibility problem with the HID I2C driver or firmware after updating to Windows 11 version 24H2. Here's how you can troubleshoot and resolve this problem.

Reinstall the HID I2C Device Driver

  1. Uninstall the HID I2C Device Driver:
    • Open Device Manager.
    • Right-click on the HID I2C Device with the triangle warning.
    • Select Uninstall Device and check the box to delete the driver software (if prompted).
  2. Restart Your PC:
    • Restart your notebook. This will allow Windows to reinstall the default driver.

Manually Install the Latest Driver

If reinstalling the driver doesn't work:

  1. Visit the HP Support website and enter your notebook's serial number or model number.
  2. Check for the latest chipset and touchpad drivers compatible with Windows 11 24H2.
  3. Download and install the drivers, even if they appear up-to-date.

Update I2C Controller (Chipset) Driver

Sometimes, the issue is not with the touchpad driver but with the I2C controller:

  1. In Device Manager, expand the System Devices section.
  2. Look for entries like Intel I2C Controller or SMBus Controller.
  3. Right-click and choose Update Driver > Search Automatically for Drivers.
  4. If no update is found, manually download the chipset driver from the HP or motherboard manufacturer's website.

Use an Older Version of the Driver

If the updated driver is causing the issue, try reverting to an older version:

  1. In Device Manager, right-click the HID I2C Device.
  2. Select Properties > Driver tab > Roll Back Driver (if the option is available).

Disable Windows Driver Updates

Windows updates sometimes overwrite functioning drivers with incompatible versions:

  1. Open Control Panel > System and Security > System.
  2. Select Advanced System Settings > Hardware tab.
  3. Click Device Installation Settings and choose No to prevent automatic driver updates.

Check BIOS Settings

Ensure that the touchpad is enabled in the BIOS:

  1. Restart your notebook and enter the BIOS/UEFI (usually by pressing F10, Esc, or Del during startup).
  2. Navigate to the Input or Touchpad Settings and ensure the touchpad/I2C device is enabled.

Test in Safe Mode

To determine if the issue is software-related:

  1. Boot into Safe Mode.
  2. Check if the touchpad works. If it does, the issue might be caused by a conflicting third-party driver or software.

Perform a System Restore

If the issue began after the 24H2 update, try restoring your system to a point before the update:

  1. Search for System Restore in the Start menu.
  2. Choose a restore point and follow the on-screen instructions.

Alternative Workaround

Until the problem is resolved, you can use an external mouse or enable the virtual touchpad on Windows:

  • Right-click the taskbar > Taskbar Settings > Touchpad > Enable Show Touchpad Button.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
