Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Updating this laptop and am unable to successfully install Microsoft 2017-05 Cumulative Security Update for Windows 10 Version 1607 for x64-based Systems (KB4019472). The system logs report error code 0x80073712.

I've run System File Checker and DISM. Both report no errors and 100% verification/validation -- though, in the case of DISM, I don't have an ISO of Windows 10 I can compare to.

I've also downloaded and run the Windows Update Troubleshooter, also with negative results despite applying the fix it suggested whacking everything from Windows Update directories. I have the update "hidden" from Windows Update for the time being to prevent the laptop from trying to download it automatically.

Thanks in advance for any assistance you can provide --

Hi! @undefined, Thanks for stopping by HP forums!

I understand you have issues installing the KB4019472 update on your PC.

Don;t worry I'll try to help you out.

Did you make any software or hardware changes on your PC?

Please try the steps recommended below.

As an alternate solution, you may attach an external storage device -- you can also connect an external hard disk or USB drive with a minimum 10GB of free space and use it to install the Creators Update.

1. Make sure you have 10GB of free space
2. Download the media creation tool.
3. Run MediaCreationTool.exe
4. Click Upgrade this PC now.
5. Select Keep personal files and apps.
6. Follow on-screen instruction for the installation to commence.

Also, try the steps recommended below.

1. Disable Windows Update.
• Launch the Run dialog box
• Type cmd then press Enter.
• Type net stop wuauserv then press Enter.
2. Reboot your PC.
3. Then delete everything in C:Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download

4. After doing step number 3, you'd need to reboot your PC, again.
5. Enable Windows Update.

• Launch the Run dialog box
• Type cmd then press Enter.
• Type net start wuauserv then press Enter.
• Type exit then press Enter.

Let me know if this helps!
Have a great day ahead! 🙂

@undefined, It's great to hear from you again.

I appreciate your efforts for trying out the steps.

As you mentioned the issue still persists after trying out the steps.

Please try the steps recommended below.

Swipe in from the right edge of the screen, and then tap Search.
(If you're using a mouse, point to the upper-right corner of the screen, move the mouse pointer down, and then click Search.)
Enter command prompt in the search box.
In the list of results, swipe down on or right-click Command Prompt, and then tap or click Run as administrator.
In the Administrator: Command Prompt window, type the following commands. Press the Enter key after each command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Scanhealth
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
To close the Administrator: Command prompt window, type Exit, and then press Enter.
Run Windows Update again.

Also, refer this article to know more information about upgrading PC to Windows 10.

I'll watch your reply!

Take Care! 🙂

My apologies for this lengthy response, but I believe it identifies the source of the problem to be a hash mismatch error in the downloaded data. Explanation follows, along with excerpt from CBS log. I believe my system is attempting to repair something that isn't the problem.

DISM /Scanhealth returned "No component store corruption detected."; DISM /Restorehealth reported "the restore health operation completed successfully." Event viewer confirms "System restore corruption detection and repair has completed. Status: 0x0, Total instances of corruption found 0, total instances of corruption repaired: 0."

FYI: Image version is 10.0.14393.0.

Kicked off Windows Update by going into Settings > Update and Security and clicking the Retry button. It found the update. Setup event log reads "Initiating changes for package KB4019472. Current state is Absent. Target state is Staged. Client id: WindowsUpdateAgent."

The description that follows seems to show that something in the download for KB4019472 isn't matching a manifest in winsxs. I monitored the whole thing from the event viewer. Here's what I found:

Windows Update Client operational log reports Windows Update succcessfully found 7 updates.

For about 20 minutes, Windows Update showed it's status as downloading and progress at 9%; there were no updates to any of the logs I'm monitoring.

Then at the 20 minute mark, progress changed to 10% and disk activity shot up to 100%.

Application log entry at the 20 minute mark: Event ID 1001, Source: Windows Error Reporting. Item P2 of the problem signature identifies as a FileHashMismatch. Item P3 as follows: "\winsxs\manifests\amd64_{GUID here}_10.0.14393.1066_none_8b50316b0c4fcad.manifest". P4 through P10 are blank.

Setup log entry at the 21 minute mark: "Initializing system store corruption detecton and repair. Detection Only: 0, Automatically Triggered: 1."

Windows Update Operational log entry at the 22 minute mark: "Windows update failed to download an update."

Application log entries at the 22 minute mark: Event ID 1001, Source: Windows Error Reporting. Item P2 of the problem signature is 80073712.

Setup log entry: "Package KB4019472 failed to be changed to the Staged state. Status: 0x80073712.

I ran the Windows Update Troubleshooter as administrator.

The Troubleshooter reports fixing the following:

- Service registration is missing or corrupt

- Potential Windows Update Database error detected

- Windows Update components must be repaired

- Check for pending updates

Reattempt the update now?
