Operating System: macOS 12.0 Monterey

I've been given an HP 27er Monitor and connected it to my MacBook Air computer via an HDMI cable. It fires up fine but defaults to my Mail page without any content other than the background picture of my PC. It doesn't change from this background scene no matter what I display on the computer screen. 

Can anyone help me with adjusting my set up to get it working properly?
