My HP Support Assistant says I have an important update - HP 3D DriveGuard sp81920 version: 6.0.41.1 - but the installation always fails. Have tried to complete this 3 times now.

Apologies for jumping in unannounced.
I do not use the HPSA on my Zbook; I can only guess why the HPSA is tripping over the update / version.
In fact, though, Zbook has a newer 3D Guard Driver installed than is suggested in the SDM (Softpaq Download Manager - used on business class computers and workstations).
Looking at Windows Updates shows that the driver was updated in Windows Update on May 10, 2018. The version is 7.0.1.1.

Oddly, Windows Update does not know the actual name of the driver and installed it as "HP Developement Company, L.P."
The install details all match and checking the Event Viewer verifies that the driver was indeed updated on the given date.

In SDM and on the Zbook Software and Driver Support page, the older 6.0.45.1RevA is still listed as the "current" driver "sp84595".
At least in the case of the SDM software, it is smart enough to know the 3D software does not need an update -- my guess is that it can detect the installed version.
Conclusion:
HPSA is ignorant of what is installed, either because the driver was installed by Windows Update AND / OR because the name of the installation is "wrong", the HPSA cannot see the installed version correctly.
Ignore the HPSA update - mark it as ignored or trash it as settings in the HPSA allow.

Hi:
There is a newer file now for that device...
6.0.45.1 Rev.A Jan 8, 2018

Ok thanks -
When I run this, the screen goes blank momentarily (just my wallpaper screen with a faded black over the top), and then nothing happens.
Have repeated this twice now.
Does this mean it has succefully installed? I've seen 0 commands/pop-ups.
Thanks!

You're very welcome.
The new version has no 3D driveguard icon, and you can check to see if the driver successfully installed by going to the device manager.
Click to expand the System Devices category.
Look down that list (should be in alphabetical order), and find the HP Mobile Data Protection Sensor (that is the 3D driveguard hardware).
Click on that device, click on the driver tab and if the driver installed successfully, it should show the 6.0.45.1 version and a date close to January of 2018. That date is just the date the driver was released to the public.
The actual driver date will be a bit older.
However the version should be 6.0.45.1.
