I found time also to make a clean install of Windows 10 1809, after building an USB install drive with the appropriate tool. I managed to directly install the latest 19.03, but it has the same identical problems as before. As user Hatshepsut1 told, I substain the same thesis that F.20 does not work properly with newer drivers, at least for some screen models (I got a Chi Mei, while Xxalazin says he/she has an LG).
BTW, right now I am using 24.20.11016.4 instead of the ancient 22.19.655.1, since this is the latest version I tried that did give me enough stability.

My machine is the second one I got first one was terrible so I returned it. Then Bestbuy had it on sale two weeks later and I bought it again, THe machine had all sorts of problems but this time I decided to fresh install windows and it worked. I'm beginning to think these problems are the luck of the draw... If you are still under warranty I would really complain and push for a different machine....Sounds like you may have hardware issues.... Goodluck...

Latest driver is not always the best.
You need to troubleshoot in clean boot, check the dump files and event viewer. Also, plenty of resources available for your errors that may give you a hint. I don't think your issues relate in any meaningful way to your display.

Wow no posts in three weeks? I guess we have all done exactly what HP was hoping. Just for all to shut up and go away. Well I just posted another request to HP private support, don't really expect anything to happen. THis particular laptop series by now has probaly been discontinued. And we all know how most electronic companies don't care about customers old machines......even if theiy were current in the last year......

You seem to be pretty savy on this what do you think of this? https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c06248988
I am leery of this I don't trust hp. Private support sent me that

Seems like BIOSes are definitely not HP's forte. All they can do is cause ppl more grief. Unbelievable.
I'd wait a bit (month?) for some feedback before touching it. I wouldn't trust their crappy support unless the issue is serious and pressing.
Weren't you ok with F20? Different laptop?

My Envy is currently on service, I'll inform you what they'll do since it was just shipped to the repair center.
I checked out the F.33 posted by xxalazin, it is for motherboards revision 08496 and 08497, so it doesn't affect the 083C6 (the one with F.17/F.19/F.20 affected in this thread).

Please keep us updated. I have the same issue. Looking for answers on reddit, but literally there is no way I can revert older BIOS. Laptop was OKAY on F.19 with the latest AMD driver 19.4.1. The only problem I had was in CPU intense apps my CPU was locked at 1.6ghz...I thought it might be BIOS issue and then I installed F.20. And then boom...
RIP. My CPU temperature on F.20 bios reached over 80 celsius in some intense applications and I am unable to downgrade it.
Whenever I boot laptop fan kicks in like formula's engine. Warranty is over...time for new laptop? HP is a joke. I think they actually discontinued updates for 2k17 envy series. The latest BIOS update was in dec 2k18, and it doesn't work (unable to install).

This whole Bios thing is asinine. Now their support is just throwing out bios that they think will work. Stupidity in action here. I don't really have any serious issue with the F20. Hoiwever I would have liked an OPTIMAL bios. It appears as likely as me ever buying another HP product..

I recall having that exact issue with a failing MB in older Acer laptop. It was due to graphics chipset and/or CPU overheating. I did replace the MB and while doing it I noticed poor shape/contact of contact cooling pads. Adding CPU cooling paste to all cooled chips could have possibly fixed it. Unfortunately my MB died just before I came to that conclusion. MB replacement + paste did that. Btw. Envy MB's from China are (were) available. Prices ranged from 100 to 300 USD. I did see 2 for 105 USD each.
Encrypted HP BIOSes that cannot be downgraded are a real curse and source of exponential problems compared to what it would be have been had the downgrade been possible. How irresponsible of HP... A downgrade to initial BIOS would have been a real option and a blessing. But coming to that conclusion is beyond HP support geniuses. All they do is create a vicious circle of impossibility. Simple BIOS related issues result in crippling or bricking previously working machines.
Keep trying, and don't let HP support off the hook. Reset the CMOS via procedure I described earlier in this thread.
In your case it has to be BIOS related since the onset was sudden after the update to F.20. Try reflashing and/or resetting CMOS.
