@SteveH611, Welcome to HP Support Community,

Thank you for posting your query; I’m here to help by guiding you through steps to resolve this issue

Check the camera privacy options

Some Envy 17 models have a physical privacy shutter or a camera disable key on the keyboard.
Make sure the shutter is open and press the camera key once to ensure the camera is enabled.

Show hidden devices in Device Manager

Open Device Manager.

Select View → Show hidden devices.

Look under Cameras, Imaging Devices, USB Devices, and Unknown Devices.

If you see the webcam listed, right-click it → Uninstall device → restart the laptop.

After restart, return to Device Manager → Action → Scan for hardware changes.

Install drivers using HP Support Assistant

Run HP Support Assistant and install:

BIOS updates

System updates

Any optional drivers under Driver – Driver or Video categories

The Envy 17-da0000 series uses the Windows UVC class driver, but HP firmware updates can restore detection.

Perform a full clean reinstall of the camera driver

If any camera or unknown device is listed:

Uninstall it.

Restart.

Let Windows reinstall the default “USB Video Device” driver.

The Envy 17 uses this standard driver after a fresh OS install

I hope this helps.

Please feel free to reply here if you have any questions or if you need further clarification on any of the steps.

Take care and have a good day.

Thanks for your reply - have followed all your advice , removed unknown devices, updated BIOS etc. but still can’t detect webcam.
have no physical button for camera but it does have a slide - left or right no different!

My last hp laptop did exactly same thing - stopped working for no reason.  .
I can’t see how to reinstall the usb video driver anywhere!!

HP diags don’t show any issue but there is no specific test for webcam!!
Think I will have to return it for repair & pray HP don’t screw up my hard drive & personal data.. ☹️
