I first noticed that my laptop's GPU drivers were out of date and tried to update them on Device Manager, but that didn't work. This has sent me down a rabbit hole and I've learned my laptop can't install new drivers, install a new instance of Windows, nor can it reset itself. It also conveniently cannot read USB drives. My laptop is running Windows 11 home 23H2.
This is what I've tried so far:
Updating drivers from Device Manager
Downloading drivers and manually installing them
Resetting the computer
Using Windows Update troubleshooter
Reinstalling windows
SFC Scan
DISM
Disabling and enabling Reagent
Uninstalling and reinstalling USB drivers (but reinstalling didn't work so now the ports just don't work)
Does anyone have any tips for where to go from here? I feel super lost since it seems like I can't update or reset anything. Thanks in advance.

Try these steps:
Check for Windows Updates
- Ensure your Windows is up to date by navigating to Settings > Windows Update and checking for updates. Install any pending updates, as they might resolve underlying system issues.
Use HP Image Assistant
- Download and install HP Image Assistant, a utility designed to help keep your HP computer's software and drivers up to date. This tool might be able to resolve driver issues effectively.
HP Support Assistant
- Utilize HP Support Assistant, which comes preinstalled on most HP laptops. This tool can help you update drivers, troubleshoot problems, and access support resources:
- Launch HP Support Assistant: You can open it from the taskbar or start menu.
- Check for updates: Use the tool to check for driver and system updates.
Manual Driver Download and Installation
- Visit the HP Customer Support - Software and Driver Downloads page.
- Enter your laptop model, and download the latest GPU and chipset drivers.
- Once downloaded, manually install these drivers.
BIOS Update
- Ensure your BIOS is up to date as it might resolve hardware compatibility issues:
- Use HP PC Hardware Diagnostics to check BIOS version and update if necessary.
Perform System Recovery (if accessible)
- If possible, create a recovery drive and use it to reset your laptop:
- Use another computer to download Windows 11 installation media to a USB drive from the Microsoft website.
- Attempt to boot from this USB drive on your HP Pavilion Gaming Laptop and perform a clean installation.
Access Safe Mode
- If your system cannot read USB drives or perform resets:
- Attempt to boot into Safe Mode and perform troubleshooting steps from there:
- Hold Shift while clicking Restart > Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart > Select Safe Mode.
- Attempt to boot into Safe Mode and perform troubleshooting steps from there:
I hope this helps.
