I do not know how to find my pointer. I have a touch screen but I want to use my touch pad. I do not have a separate mouse.

Welcome to the HP Forums 🙂
I would like to take a moment and thank you for using this forum, it is a great place to find answers.
As I understand your pointer is missing as the touchpad isn't working anymore,
Don't worry as I'll be glad to help, however, to provide an accurate resolution, I need a few more details:
Did you ensure the touchpad is turned on?
Have you checked with an alternate mouse to check if that works?
While you respond to that, here's what you need to do:
-
On some touchpads, you can turn on or off the Touchpad by double tapping in the upper left corner of the Touchpad. Double tap to turn the Touchpad on, repeat to turn the Touchpad off.
-
Perform a hard reset by following the steps in the HP document Performing a Hard Reset or Forced Reset (in English). A hard reset clears the driver instructions. Your computer rereads all instructions from the drivers and software stored in the Operating System which can solve some problems.
-
Be sure you have the latest drivers for your Touchpad. Use the following steps to install the latest drivers.
-
Go to the HP Drivers and Downloads web page. Enter your computer model number and then click Go.
-
Select your computer model from the list of results.
-
Select your operating system from the drop-down menu and then click Next.
-
Scroll down to select the driver category Driver - Keyboard, Mouse and Input Devices.
-
Click the Download button next to the appropriate TouchPad or ClickPad driver. The file downloads to your Downloads folder
-
Open your Downloads folder and double-click to install the latest driver. Follow on-screen instructions to complete the installation.
-
If the issue persists, Attempt using an alternate/external mouse.
(If that works when the touchpad is disabled on Synaptic software, it would mean that it's a touchpad failure,
However, if the external mouse doesn't work either, it could be a software/driver issue).
Uninstall and reinstall the drivers for your mouse:
Go to the Device Manager and select your mouse. Uninstall it and then restart your computer. During restart, your mouse driver will automatically be reinstalled.
-
1. Click on Start and type ‘Device Manager’.
-
2. Click Device Manager.
-
3. Click + sign next to Mouse.
-
4. Right-click on mouse entry and choose "uninstall".
-
5. Restart your computer.

Hello,
I think I sent you a reply as a PM. I am posting here also. All of your information war clear and easy for me to follow. However it did not work. I had to call tech support for more help as I knew I was probably not going to be able to back up my computer before setting it to factory settings. That didnot fix the problem. I so see the touchpad program-Synaptics as a installed program but it does not show up in device manager. I pretty sure that does mean I need a new touchpad?
After all of that I am now working on my laptop with a mouse which is fine for now. My problem is I do not know anything about getting all of my info from that hard drive back to my computer. I am also working on window 8 and not 10.
I believe I will do more searching to see if I can can anyone with as clear hlep as you gave me. I appreciate your time
you gave to sending that post!
