How it should work:

At this writing, the current version for the application is 9.6.x

The current version of the software type is 8.8.x.

The HP Support Assistant installation wrapper (available at the website) should install the particular version and type (application or software) for your computer.

Normally,

You can uninstall the HPSA

Restart the computer and log in

Install a fresh copy of the HP Support Assistant.

The problem, if there is one, is the system may have had (might still have) either / both / parts-of the HP Support System tangled up in the Windows File system.

Try / Consider

==============================================================

Software Flavor - Programs and Features

FIRST > Uninstall the HP Support Assistant

Control Panel > icon view > Programs and Features

Scroll down, find, Uninstall the HP Support Assistant

Important:  When / If asked whether you want to save any presets / personal HPSA information, respond to have your personal data associated with the program removed along with the HPSA software.

NOTE:  If the software will not uninstall, appears to be removed and then shows up again, or is otherwise not “going away” when you tell it to do so, try an Uninstaller program.

Microsoft:  Fix problems that block programs from being installed or removed

NEXT Uninstall HP Support Solutions Framework software from Programs and Features

NOTE:  HP Support Solutions Framework is a subset of HPSA.  For this reason, HPSA must be uninstalled before the Solutions Framework can be removed.

Restart the computer and log in.

and / or

Any Flavor -  HPSA listed in Settings > Apps

Settings > Apps > Apps and Features

Search or scroll down and find HP Support Assistant

Left-Click on the item (HP Support Assistant) > Uninstall

Search or scroll down and find HP Support Solutions Framework

If you find a listing for the Solutions software, then

Left-Click on the item (HP Support Assistant) > Uninstall

Restart the computer and log in.

What Next?

If the uninstall process is successful,  you can then install a fresh copy of the HPSA from the Website.

Download, Save, Install the latest supported HP version of the HP Support Assistant

Website / Information / Video / White Paper / Download

HP Support Assistant

Partial excerpt from the Website:

“Ready to go on your HP PC

HP Support Assistant is included on new HP desktop and notebook PCs. You can install it on PCs from other manufacturers for easy access to support resources and tools for HP printers and PCs. Click the ? icon on your system tray to start HP Support Assistant or download now. During setup, selected new HP PC models running Windows 10 will receive version 9. All other PC models will receive version 8.”

What if?

If the software / application cannot be untangled from the File System,

That is -

No matter what you do,

No matter what you try,

No matter what solutions you find,

Nothing works and you cannot get the HP Support Assistant installed, then:

The solution is very likely to reload your Windows Operating System.

This is a "least fun" scenario.

It works.

Thanks

Have tried all but it did not work

Thanks anyway

Would prefer to keep working without it than to reset the operational system

Thanks

You are welcome.

I get it - lots of hassle just to retrieve HPSA.

This doesn't happen all that often - a few times, HPSA (that vintage that started with version 9.4.x in your Software and Drivers) would get tangled up.  LOTS of solutions proposed - feel free to search them out and try them.  No Joy?  The "sure" fix is to buck-up and reload Windows.

Were it me, I'd ignore the whole situation until you feel like hassling with it again - or when you need to load Windows anyway (that happens to most of us at some point).

Meantime, check for updates occasionally and manage these with a manual download/installation.

Stay Safe.
