My new laptop would freeze about once a day. I checked the history viewer and it showed the cause of the problem was the HP Support Assistant. Anyone know why this is happening?

Sometimes on a newly setup laptop HP SA will cause slow downs and such for a few days as it is scanning for updates to software/drivers. If it continues to be a nuisance-open HP SA and click Settings at top. Put a check in "Never check for updates" to see if that resolves it. Just remember to open HP SA about every month or so and Click "Updates" to scan manually. Or go to your Support page and download updates manually.
You can also Uninstall HP SA in control Panel. Programs & Features.
