The HP Support Assistant badge on task bar indicates pending updates or notifications. The hover says "HP Support Assistant information available".

When I open the app, it indicates a "1" on the My Devices tab at top left.

But when I click on the device it shows no updates or messages or troubleshooters.

And when I click Check for Updates, it finds none. Yet that number in the top left refuses to go away.

I tried Chat with HP Support. They messed around for an hour, uninstalled HP Support Assistant, deleted my device, tried detecting it (not found), added it manually, and assured me that the "1" in the top left just indicated I had one app currently connected.

When I clicked on "Updates", it told me that I needed to be signed in on that device (THIS ONE!!!) to check for updates. RIDICULOUS!!!

So I uninstalled all the HP Software on this computer (except Event), restarted and reinstalled HP Support Assistant. When run, it showed 30 notifications for the manually-added copy of my laptop. It also detected my laptop properly and offered to add it. I did, and deleted the manually-added one. It shows no updates, messages or trouble-shooters for the auto-detected laptop. even after checking for updates manually.

But I still have the "1" in the My Devices tab and the little blue bubble on the edge of the main icon beside the tray. So after several hours of messing around, I'm back to where I started. I am reticent to engage HP Support again because I have lost faith that they know what they are doing.

BTW, I have been using Windows since 95 first came out. So I know my way around Windows. Don't bother suggesting the usual rote responses like "restart", "reset" or "reinstall Windows".

Thank you for the generic instructions. I have already done all of this so it wasn't of much help. The logon in the task bar is still indication that I have something to do:

HP Support Assistant logo on Task Bar has an i on it.pgn.png

The generic instructions don't say anything about how to fix it. This is *really* annoying because now I won't know when there *really* is something to do.

Thank you for posting back.

That HP Support Assistant symbol is normal not to worry!
Not all updates are necessary; some are simply recommended. You do not have to download and install all updates, however, if you do not, the exclamation mark will continue to show on the HP Support Assistant icon which is normal.

I have the same problem.  The HP Support Assistant icon in the Task Bar displays and exclamation point.  When I open the Support Assistant, "My Devices" in upper left hand corner shows 1 device with an exclamation point.  I have seven HP devices listed, and none of them shows any indication that support is required.  No matter what I do, I cannot remove the exclamation point from the Task Bar or the application itself.

Thank you for posting on HP Support Community.

Don't worry as I'll be glad to help, I have a few troubleshooting steps we could try to fix the issue:

Follow these steps to fix the problem:

  1. Turn off antivirus software and the firewall.
  2. Go to the HP Customer Support website. ...
  3. Download and install the latest version of HP Support Assistant.
  4. Restart the computer to complete the installation process. ...
  5. Click the HP Support Assistant icon to open the application.

Click here: Troubleshooting HP Support Assistant

And, also reply back with computer product and model number.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance.

Hello Echo_Lake,

I followed your instructions, and the problem is not resolved.  "My Devices" still displays an exclamation point, but none of my devices indicates any necessary action.

I am using an HP Pavilion dv7.  Product:XG834UA#ABA

@Netplex,

What is the operating system you are using?

Did you uninstall and reinstalled the HP support assistant?

Take care.

Cheers!
