When I look at the reliability monitor, every three to four days there is an application failure described thus:
Description
Faulting Application Path: C:\Program Files\HPCommRecovery\HPCommRecovery.exe
Problem signature
Problem Event Name: APPCRASH
Application Name: HPCommRecovery.exe
Application Version: 2.0.9.0
Application Timestamp: 59ae543e
Fault Module Name: KERNELBASE.dll
Fault Module Version: 10.0.16299.15
Fault Module Timestamp: 4736733c
Exception Code: e0434352
Exception Offset: 0000000000013fb8
OS Version: 10.0.16299.2.0.0.768.101
Locale ID: 1033
Neither Admistrative events nor Micorsoft System events logs an show any type of error involving comm recovery.
Today for instance the last error reported in the event log was at 8:03 on both when DCOM failed to start. This error occured at 12:09. AdminTools Services says it's "humming right along".
I cannot find a reliable answer for the problem; a fix, an explanation, nothing. I don't even know if it is a problem.
Will someone please explain.

Hi @wfsj,
Thank you for responding,
It's great to have you back 😉
I recommend you end the HPcommrecovery process in task manager and check if it helps. HPCommRecovery.exe is not essential for the Windows OS and causes relatively few problems.
Some malware camouflages itself as HPCommRecovery.exe, particularly when located in the C:\Windows or <C:\Windows\System32 folder>. Therefore, you should check the HPCommRecovery.exe process on your PC to see if it is a threat. I recommend you run a full virus scan on your computer to make sure it is virus free.
If the issue persists, please contact our phone support to get HP Recovery Media to reinstall Windows.
HP Support can be reached by clicking on the following link:
* Open link: www.hp.com/contacthp/
* Enter Product number or select to auto detect
* Scroll down to "Still need help? Complete the form to select your contact options"
* Scroll down and click on HP contact options - click on Get a Case & phone number.
They will be happy to assist you immediately.
If the unit is under warranty repair services under the manufacturer's warranty will be free of charge.

Hi @wfsj,
Welcome to the HP Forums 🙂
I would like to take a moment and thank you for using this forum, it is a great place to find answers.
As I understand, you get an application failure message.
No worries, as I'll be glad to help you, that said, I'll need a few more details to dissect your concern & provide an accurate solution:
What is the product number?
When was the last time it was working fine?
Were there any hardware/software changes made?
To resolve the issue, please follow these steps
Step 1: System Restore: Restore an earlier date when your computer was working fine. This will not affect your personal data or applications.
- Turn off the computer and wait at least 5 seconds with the computer in a full off state.
- Turn on the computer and repeatedly press the F11 key, about once every second, until you see the Windows loading screen.
- If a language selection screen opens, select the language you want to use to continue.
- On the Choose your keyboard layout screen, select the keyboard layout that matches your keyboard type.
- On the Choose an option screen, click Troubleshoot.
- On the Troubleshoot screen, click Advanced Options
- On the Advanced options screen, click System Restore.
- Click Windows 8, click Windows 8.1, or click Windows 10 as the target operating system.
- The System Restore window opens.
- Click Next.
- Click the restore point that you want to use, and then click next.
- The Confirm Restore Point window opens.
- Click Finish to restore your computer to a previous point.
- Do yes in the warning that appears.not interrupt System Restore when it starts. Doing so can corrupt your hard drive and create more problems. Click
- System Restore returns the computer configuration to a previous point in time and restarts.
If the issue persists, I suggest you create a new user account: Click Here
Let me know how that pans out
I hope you have a good day ahead,
And feel free to ask any other queries as well.

it would really help if I knew what it was. Nowhere on the internet is there a description of the executable, only how to fix it. This is what I posted. "What is it"?
All services.msc says it that it checks and recovers devices. That in and of itself is reason enough as to why the reliability monitor gives an application error for hpcommrecovery.exe. There are no connected devices except for an Arris SB 6121 ethernet modem.
As far as all the steps that you listed, the problem started after a recovery. Still there when I created a new account. etc.
So, please define C:\Program Files\HPCommRecovery\HPCommRecovery.exe and if it is essential to the Windows OS or just an HP add on like HP help and support, HP audio switch or HP friend?
