I'm trying to download/install latest Windows 10 update but it keeps telling me there is not enough storage on c drive. I have tried adding an external storage device but this doesn't seem to work.

That is a frequent objection for those Stream products. The "SSD" is only 32GB and cannot be upgraded, so there is not enough room to do the update. The only solution is to do a clean install of the latest update instead of allowing the PC to do the update. You can get the latest Windows 10 from here but download it directly to a flash drive that is 8GB or larger.
If you need the install media for Windows 10, you can make it from this Microsoft download
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10
Scroll down to the "Using the tool to create installation media"
and then follow the directions. You can make either the DVD or USB. Use this new media to reinstall Windows 10. Do not let is "Upgrade" but pick Custom. Make sure all of the pictures, etc and important data is backed up to removable external media.
When the install asks for the product key, click the "I don't have a product key" option to continue,
then the install will continue. It will be activated once it connects to the internet, as it uses a digital key.
I'm not an HP employee.
