Need some advice here. Using an old HP laptop (about 8 years old) that was recently upgraded to Windows 11 25H2, and performance took a big hit. Boot is slow, apps lag, and the fan goes wild sometimes. The C drive only has around 10GB free space, which probably doesn’t help.

What are the most effective things to speed up this Windows 11 laptop in this situation? Looking for realistic fixes for older hardware—cleanup tips, settings to change, or upgrades that actually make a difference. Not expecting miracles, just want it usable again. Any help is appreciated!

Running Windows 11 on an 8-year-old HP laptop is challenging, especially if the drive is nearly full and the hardware is limited. Here are some practical, realistic steps to speed up Windows 11 PC without expecting miracles:

1. Free Up Disk Space
Delete unnecessary files: Use Disk Cleanup (cleanmgr) to remove temporary files, system files, and old Windows update files.
Uninstall unused apps: Remove bloatware or apps you no longer need.
Move files: Transfer large files (videos, photos) to an external drive or cloud storage.
Clear Downloads folder: Often filled with junk.

2. Manage Startup Programs to speed up Windows 11 PC
Disable unnecessary startup apps:
Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
Go to the Startup tab.
Disable programs that you don’t need launching at startup (antivirus, updater, etc.).

3. Adjust Visual Effects for Better Performance
Reduce animations and effects:
Go to Settings > Accessibility > Visual Effects.
Turn off "Animation effects" and "Transparency effects."
Or, for more control, right-click This PC > Properties > Advanced system settings > Settings (under Performance).
Choose Adjust for best performance or selectively disable effects.

You laptop even support windows 11? If not I suggest you to use windows 11 or Linux. You laptop likely can't keep up with new windows 11's new ai features, bloat, etc.
