Pleas list the steps to create a bootable USB flash drive with HP diagnostics.

Reinventing the wheel is something I don't do.

Just download the executable file from the link at the HP UEFI Diagnostics main web page, plug a usb flash drive into your notebook and then run the file. Follow the prompts.

I downloaded file SP8072, plugged in a USB flash drive, unpacked SP8072 and followed the propmts.  Rebooted and went to Device Selection Menu, selected USB  drive and clicked - then I waited for the system to boot from the USB flash drive - nothing happened.  What could have gone wrong?

HP Recommended

You should choose the boot option when starting your notebook to prevent it from accessing the hard disk.

Choose the USB flash drive and the boot process should begin.

I inserted the flash drive, went to Device Menu, clicked on USB flash drive, nothing happened.  The flash drive appears not be bootable.  What programs should be on the flash drive?

What brand ,capacity and type (usb 2.0 or 3.0) is the usb flash drive?

The drive is not going to be bootable.

I just read that in the installer software at the stage where you choose the install location.  Try installing it again from the file and read it more carefully. You should install it on the hard drive if you want to be able to access it from startup.  As long as your notebook is a mid-2012 and later unit, it should have a UEFI BIOS and GPT format hard disk.
