Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

My laptop is getting sent away to get fixed and the email says I should remove passwords. How do I do this?

What I have done when sending for repair at HP:

 

Create a new, local account on your computer.

Edit the account and change it to type Administrator.

Assign a simple password - exactly the type you are warned never to use, for example, 6789

Write down the userid / name of the account AND the password on a sticky paper and attach the paper on / near the keyboard.

 

Write down the name of the account AND the password on another paper.

Include the paper in the box and / or email the message to your case manager (whomever you are sending the computer).

You are welcome.

 

The key is to edit the new account and make sure it is type Administrator.

 

When you receive your computer back from repair, keep the local account on the system.  Change the password from the simple easy-to-guess password to something more secure.  If you ever need the account, for example, if your own "main" account is inaccessible, you can at least access the computer and your data while you work out how to fix your main account.

 

If you do have anything personal (folders, photos, bank data, "anything") on that computer, consider making two backups of the data somewhere "not on the computer" and then removing that personal data from the computer.  When you get your computer back from repair, you can copy it back into your account.  This also helps make sure that you can still access your most important data while your computer is "away" from your control.
